It seems like most of the complaints people have about this book revolve around one of the mysteries not being solved. Trust me--French did it that way on purpose, not because she 'couldn't think of anything', and it is brilliant. What you imagine from the terribly creepy, disturbing details you DO have surrounding the event is far more terrible than anything French could have handed to you in a nicely wrapped package. Furthermore, French prepares you-- she hints to the reader that the mystery is not going to be resolved. I wasn't expecting it to be. What I have formulated in my imagination is so much more terrifying and creepy than any 'logical explanation' might be.

Tana French's sequel to The Woods is an equally well-written novel with a more satisfying resolution. The characters are masterfully drawn and draw you into their unique world. Ms. French's mysteries are a delightful change from the best-seller norm, because they extend beyond the entertainment plane into the realm of literary works. You can't wait to get back to the story, but don't have any underlying guilt that you are leaving your intellect behind as you do.

That said, I miss the flawed, but interesting, Rob Ryan from the Woods. And Cassie's periodic references in this book to their easy and charming camaraderie prior to the break-up of their partnership reinforces that feeling. Perhaps, when she has fulfilled her creative urges to tell the stories of other characters, Ms. French will ... Read More

The complex plot of this exceptional novel involves two mysteries: a murder mystery, and a psychological one. The backstory sets up the psychological mystery. Twenty years earlier, in a semi-rural suburb of Dublin, an unknown tragedy befell three childhood friends. The three, two boys and a girl, all twelve years old, had been playing in a nearby woods and failed to return home. When the woods were searched, one of the boys was found, terrified and scratched up, and his shoes were saturated with blood that was not his own. He had no memory of what had happened, and no trace of the other two children was ever found.

The story is told from the first person point of view of the grown up survivor. Years earlier, he changed his name slightly--keeping his last name, Ryan, but now going by a different first ... Read More
