This is a lovely book with simple, thoughtful passages for the days leading up to Christmas. The passages evoke feelings of centeredness, peace and calm similar to awakening to a beautiful, fresh snowfall.

This is a wonderful collection of American poetry classics. It contains most of the poems that have been taught through the years in American schools as the ' classics ' of American Literature. It does not really touch the American poetry of the past fifty years. Most of its poems are the shorter poems of great poetic masters , for instance for Wallace Stevens, " Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird' and the 'Emperor of Ice- Cream' but not the 'Idea of Order at Key West' for Eliot, " Prufrock" but not the "Wasteland " or the "Quartets". A wonderful collection most highly recommended.

"Murder in the Cathedral" is T.S. Eliot's dramatization of the murder of Thomas Becket. Because the tale is told in verse, historical accuracy is sacrificed. While some may appreciate this element, I would prefered the story to be closer to reality. Though the chorus may be a fabulous part of the dramatization in person, the flow of the story seems to ebb in a negative stream in these extended passages while reading. The story of Thomas Becket is quite inspiring, yet I feel I would be misleading reviewers by saying it is here. The basic plot is accurate. King Henry II believes that Thomas Becket's meddlesome ways are undermining the king's rule. The poetic lines show a writer in his element. Though I feel the story was compromised in the process.

I am not going to review the famous poem. Such a review, from an Amazon customer, would be unnecessary and preposterous. (It astonishes me so few of my fellow reviewers have realized this). This is a review of the selection of texts this Norton Critical Edition has annexed to the poem. The editor of this book has (a little lazily, perhaps) simply concertinaed Eliot's sources and a sampling of critical essays into 280 pages. The reader receives little to no editorial guidance from Michael North. But the approach is simple and it works. If you are determined to understand Eliot's poem, then all the pieces of the exegetical puzzle are here, in one convenient volume, to be pieced together. While T.S. Eliot's "Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock" is what he is most famous for, "The Four Quartets" merit much to reckoned with. I remember the first time I read "Burnt Norton". I was crashing at a friend of a friend of mine's place at UC Berkeley. I wanted to learn how to be poetic, and "Burnt Norton" was great help with such a matter. It is one of my favorite poems.

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is T.S. Eliot at his best. He depicts an entire generation by painting a beautiful and tragic image of the one main character. Eliot's words are both flowing and concise, which is no small feat, and his metaphors and allusions are well chosen and relevant. This poem is absolutely worth reading several times over. T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland is like the fourth season of Family Guy. It's more of the same from a source that has produced quality work in the past, but falls short this time. Family Guy and T.S. Eliot are each known for their strange connections; T.S. Eliot once compared a skyline to a patient etherized on a table, and Family Guy once compared Ronald Reagan to a toaster. This all unfolds among American and European expatriates in Paris in the 1920s, as royalty is dying out, the scars of World War I have still not healed, and belief in traditional religion is waning.
