This book is above average and well worth the reader's time. Some reviewers think its one of the all-time greats, but I wouldn't go that far. Its too naive and unrealistic at times and jarringly anachronistic at others. I realize that when reading fiction the reader should just let themselves be carried along and suspend disbelief and all that. But Ms. Kidd wrote some passages that just snap the reader out of their reverie. For example, I'm not sure Zach and Lily could ride around town together in the Boatwright's truck without serious consequences for Zach. Surely August and June would know better than that. I went out and bought this immediately after finishing Secret Life of Bees, because I had enjoyed that so much. Unfortunately, I had to force myself to finish it! The story dragged, and the foreshadowing took away whatever mystery there might have been. Hated the main character (Jessie) - her self reflection was childish & her "self-discovery" was trite and stereotypical. Now, all that said - Kidd writes beautifully. This one just needed a better story & better characters...

I picked up this title as one it was a woman's spiritual journey and two I like the author for her other two books - secret life of bees and mermaid chair. I am not a christian woman, and my religion does have a feminine version of God. But no woman is really spared the overwhelming experience of patriarchy in one form or the other. Sue's experience seems to come from an authentic place of pain and genuine need to explore, quite unlike Liz Gilbert or other self pitying women. She is obviously well read in theology of her own religion and has put great effort into understanding the 'song' as she calls it, the spiritual calling behind the practice of the religion. There is so much wisdom packed into this book - it is a pleasure to follow Merton's nuanced and penetrating mind into the depth of the Christian faith. I particularly enjoyed the introductory chapters on the nature of contemplation, the "moral theology of the devil" and "the woman clothed in the sun". You may also enjoy Merton's "Ascent to Truth" and "The Inner Experience". May you be inspired and challenged by this book.

This book was written while the author was still a traditional Christian. It is my understanding that she has gone on to write things that conflict with the Bible and the teachings of Jesus. Consequently, this book can serve as a warning because at the time this book came out her insights were quite good. She has some helpful insight on praying continually. In essence it has to do with being conscious of God's presence all the time and sharing life as it is lived with Him. Chronologically she begins her journey by describing that she was overwhelmed with busyness, trying to please people and "earn" points with God. With her first novel recently made into a major motion picture, Sue Monk Kidd will become more widely known, even to non-readers (do such people really exist?). Therefore, I think it is important for those who loved THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES and THE MERMAID CHAIR to peer into the soul of the author through "notes at random" musings compiled into one neat volume. Maybe FIRSTLIGHT would not have struck such a chord if I hadn't read it in waiting areas of a Catholic hospital. Ms. Kidd's early memories of special moments with her mother were particularly touching (real lessons for parents here), and I was blown away by the true story of a dogwood tree blooming in September as a healing sign. FIRSTLIGHT provided more than one Kleenex moment and more than a hundred inspirations.

We were told to order our Women's Summer Study books on line. The book we were shown was a larger beautiful book with wonderful pictures on every page. What came was a much smaller version with ony a few pictures. I was very disappointed with what I received. Especially since I placed the order for several girl frieinds. Suzanne

I just purchased this title for a friend who is retiring. The book is full of uplifting and thought-provoking essays and personal experiences that will beg to be read over and over. I was surprised to learn that Sue Monk Kidd (Secret Life of Bees and Mermaid's Chair)wrote for Guidepost Magazine, and this is a compilation of many of those selections.
