The story is interesting, especially for someone who is involved in care giving. It is slower than I had expected.

If you have a lot in common with the narrator (professional class woman/vaguely dissatisfied with everything), AND you don't like to think while you read, you may enjoy this book.

Normally, I would give a book 2 stars just for being able to reach people (which this does), but I can't because it was full of pretentious language and meandering descriptions/anecdotes which didn't really contribute to the plot or the characters. Also, it was poorly researched.

If you like reading about somewhat depressing family life and relationships, I recommend reading something by Ann Tyler instead (I actually don't like her either, but she's good at what she does.)The Amateur Marriage (Tyler, Anne (Large Print))

I found this story of a divorced mother's first relationship following her divorce--and the reprecussions of that relationship--to be quite thought provoking. This book will stay with you long after you have finished it. It is multi-layered and offers more questions than answers. After finishing The Good Mother, my first thought was--I wish I belonged to a book group that had read this. The character of Anna is very well developed, yet I finished the book still thinking "What is the author's intention? Is Anna a 'good' mother?" The topics explored and the ultimate conclusion are controversial and merit discussion.

I believe there should be ratings for books as in the film industry. I had read good reviews of this book but couldn't get past the sexual filth in the first few pages. The story concept sounded so interesting that I continued past the sprinkling of nasty language. But when she began recounting disturbing sexual descriptions, I stopped reading. When I don't like a book or choose not to keep it in my library, I put it in the give-away box but this one I threw in the trash.

I enjoyed reading the story of how Promiseland started. I appreciated how Sue Miller and David Staal broke down the secrets to their success. The part about thriving in ministry was a message I especially needed to hear because sometimes I try to do it all. Other inspiring parts had to do with recruiting volunteers and forming teams to do ministry together.

A well-written book which inspired me greatly.

Editors Paula S. Carlson and Peter S. Hawkins have compiled stories and essays from contemporary writers that reflect people's experience in dealings the life events, boredom, crises, losses, disappointments and unexpected touches of grace. Some sections are painful to read and others are funny or joyful (like life itself.) It is interesting that even in our secular society people still ask the questions Job asked and still try to find meaning for themselves like Abraham and Sarah. The editors provide brief bios for the writers and propose discussion questions for groups.that might be helpful in groups. It seems that the problems of being human have not changed greatly in the last few thousand years.

Another novel where the plot has roots in World War Two.

A man's friend tries to kill him, and he finds a brother that he thought was dead. To top that off, add in an international financial conspiracy.

At the same time, a government agent is investigating the deaths of men of money and power, but when she finds out too much, orders are given to get rid of her.

Naturally, the twain meet and work as allies to uncover what is going on with the Sigma operation.
The secret is truly bizarre, and explains it all.

This was my 4th Sue Miller novel, and what a disappointment. After reading THE GOOD MOTHER, LOST IN THE FORREST, and WHILE I WAS GONE, all of which were good, it took me a long time to finish this extremly boring tale. The main character Lottie, has "issues" with her ex-husband, her present husband, her mother, son, and brother. The book was so boring I didn't really care what happened to her. Don't bother with this one.
