This is wonderful account of scientific research on 19th century conducted not with high tech instruments but with an open and inquisitive mind and ground work. It eventually traces the cause of cholera to water when all the medics were sure at that time that diseases like this were transmitted by air in the form of foul smells. What is really amazing is that the works of Dr. Snow and Reverend Whitehead points to water as the source but they did not have any means to identify or propose what was wrong in the water. The cholera bacteria was identified several decades later. But still by careful observations, statistics, lots of interviews and applied logic they identified the contaminated water form a particular well was the cause.

I recommend this book to whoever is interested ... Read More

Steven Johnson's polemic can be read as a counter-argument to Neil Postman's influential classic "Amusing Ourselves to Death," and that's exactly what Mr. Johnson would like us to believe because he does mention Mr. Postman throughout his book and he takes as his foil the argument that mass entertainment is making us stupid, which is Mr. Postman's original thesis oversimplified.

Mr. Johnson examines three main forms of popular culture -- videogames, television, and the Internet -- and argue well that each in their own way are challenging brain function, and increasing our intelligence quotient. Mr. Johnson sees a virtuous cycle where popular culture is becoming more complicated and complex in order to entertain us by challenging us, and because we are challenged we participate in the process and ... For those with a technical interest in the matter, this is a nice soft intro to the topics with which concerned. It is written with a somewhat emotional style; probably not an ideal technical resource.

For the readers not akin to the concepts at all, the book successfully conveys a nice (and vitally important) way of interpreting natural phenomena (that of self-organisation, collective intelligence, etc.), but, through its somewhat emotional style, may create a sort of hype around the concept.

A pleasant and fast read, over-all; worth it.

Night Stalkers grips you and hangs on. Durant's Faith in his God and his fellow soldiers is inspiring. The only "survivor book" that tops it is Marcus Lutrell's "Lone Survivor".

This book is a good attempt to connect psychology with neuroscience by explaining everyday life in terms of brain structures, neurotransmitters and psychological tendencies. I would give this book about 4 and a half stars: I would not say it was awesome, but in general I would say this book indeed served its purpose: provide interesting and valuable information and stimulate interest in neuroscience. This was book was divided into several parts, most interesting portions of which I will mention. In the chapter titled Mind Sight he slightly he discusses our ability to determine someone's mood or state of mind from facial expressions. An important point in this discussion is that in individuals affected by autism this skill is not as developed which hampers their ability to function as effectively in society. A significant component ... Read More

I bought this book because I was having trouble with my college chemistry class. It helped me out a lot. The layout is great, all the important stuff is in bold letters or in boxes that sum up everything you need to know, short and sweet. Definitely would recommend to others to buy.

One of the best books I have read in years. It took me years that to locate the first copy I found and I was willing to pay $100.00 for it. I still consider the purchase to have been worth it, but am glad I found copies some month later for firneds of mine for a lot less expense. I think that every truely spiritual library should have at least one copy of this book.

I was thrilled to find that someone had taken the time to go search these truely marvelous hermits out. I wish more of them could be found and protected from governments.

These hermits have been contributing to the world for centuries, possibly more than a millinium, and the world would be less without their existance.

Respectfully Submitted,

I thought this book was a very disappointing purchase. All it is, is a very vague encyclopaedia. They didnt go into much detail about anything and the stuff they did go into detail on wasn't that important. The worst part was how they stress in the product detail the new feats and prestige classes. Which are about 2 or 3 good ones at best. This book is a waist of money and time.
