This book is easy to read and comprhensive. It even tells a person how to start a garden in the spring. Great for first timers who didn't know to get the garden prepared the Autumn before. It also provides lists on which veggies are easy to grow and hearty and which require more care and are delicate.

I'm amazed there aren't more reviews of this book!!!

This book, written by the founder of Territorial Seed Company, is *vital* for those living west of the Cascade mountains, where heavy winter rain, unique soil conditions (we don't get deep freezes), and mild summer temperatures really makes other American gardening books (including Colemans' New Organic Grower) less than optimal. Indeed, he suggests using British gardening books, since our climate is more similar to England than New England!

A recent transplant from Arizona, I was lucky enough to stumble onto this book about June 2008, halfway through the growing season. His predictions about which vegetables worked were indeed accurate (eggplant and peppers are extremely difficult to grow in this climate, and you ... Read More

I just finished reading an online version of this book at http://www.enotalone.com/article/13231.html, and it has greatly changed my outlook on health. Using a common-sense, physiological approach to address the causes of disease, the author presents methods for overcoming various afflictions -- major arthritis, high blood pressure, and even cancers, just to name a few. More importantly, though, she addresses what she believes to be the root cause of disease, a fact that many people do not want to face: unhealthy living.

She argues that standard medical professionals fail to address the true causes of disease, instead opting for prescriptions or even disfiguring surgery to remove what amounts to symptoms of other underlying problems. By treating only the symptoms, the true disease ... Read More

While the horticultural information is minimally valuable, the communist anti-capitalist quackery contained herein is worthless and wrong. Much better books are available such as the Vegetable Gardeners Bible by Edward C. Smith expanding on the deep wide bed philosophy of the French Intensive Method and Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew which replaces commercial techniques with one based on providing food for a single family. Add a Rodale book on organic gardening and you will have all the information you need without the moralistic communist anti-profit preaching of Mr. Solomon.

I was very pleased by the large number of high-quality reproductions. Still, as far as I'm concerned there should have been *more*. The book contains (a rough count) about 280 pages containing text or mostly text, out of about 630 total pages. However, I'm very happy with the book.

Steve Solomon's work in producing the Organic Gardener's Composting is second to none. His research standards are those of a true academic, yet his writing and general presentation of the material is accessible, non formulaic and for a book of this nature, subtly novelesque.
I headed straight for the chapter on Sir Albert Howard's composting methods at Indore in the 1930's and wasn't disappointed - fascinating reading. Also especially interesting was the chapter on vermicomposting. Steve doesn't seem to add material just for the sake of it unless it meets his rigorous criteria. Could only get hold of a 2nd hand copy at a premium price, but have no regrets - it's a gem!

I don't quite get what this book is. I think it's some transcription of some take-off on a 'real' book by Steve Solomon, now out of print, called Water Wise Gardening. This has typos starting on the cover, and continuing throughout, and has the feel of some vanity press book- it reminds me totally of a bootleg tape. But it's cheap and the information is really good if you're interested in growing a food garden without irrigation. The secret is that you need a LOT of room. I have NO room, or nearly none, so many of the spacing guidelines given for planting are not applicable, but the principles are well-explained and there are definitely some methods I can and will immediately adopt to reduce my water use in the garden.

Steve Solomon is the guru for those of us growing vegetables in the Pacific ... Read More
