This book was my introduction to Steve Martini. While the underlying premise is not plausible--that certain language in the Constitution about slavery could cause national unrest a couple of hundred years later when all kinds of remedial legislation has been enacted--the novel still presents an interesting murder mystery. At times it is true that Martini sometimes sounds like a professor in a trial advocacy course as he explains the technicalities involved in admitting evidence and general trial strategy. However, these discussions do not significantly slow down the action.

I don't feel that this novel is on the same level as John Grisham novels, but I still found it to be an entertaining read. Martini writes well, and the story progresses at a good pace as the reader tries to ... Read More

Undue Influence is another strong effort from Martini featuring Paul Mandriani. This book should definitely be enjoyable to those who have enjoyed other novels with the Mandriani character. In general, Martini has again pulled together an intriguing cast of characters and a very interesting story line. In the wake of his wife's death, Mandiani is moving forward in life with his young daughter. However, in honoring his wife's dying wish to help her sister, Mandriani is thrust into a situation that is highly emotional and challenging for him. As the book progresses, the reader is consistently treated to Mandriani's quick wit, sharp mind, and cynical sense of reality in the world. It had been a number of years since I had read any of Martini's works and I had forgotten how much I had enjoyed ... Read More

True, he is not Turow. Very few novelists can be Turow. (Only one in fact: Turow). But Steve Martini is an entertaining writer.

I had only one problem with this novel: when the true killer is revealed, the "hows" are explained, but not the "whys." It is never shown WHY this person would want to go to all the trouble to frame the accused. The killer in fact never had anything at all against the accused. The killer hated the deceased, that's a given, and those reasons are explained. But to pin it on the accused made no real sense to me.

BTW, another reviewer voiced objection to frequent use by the author of the phrase "made a face..." That is a "Turowism" through and through. "He made a face." "She made a face." Scott does it all the time. In context of scene, ... Read More

What a great book. This is the first book I've ever read by Steve Martini and I can't wait to start the next (Compelling Evidence). Prime Witness was engrossing from start to finish. My only reservation is that I would have liked to have seen a little more courtroom action. I don't recall prime Witness being made into a motion picture, but it sure seems like a great candidate.

Couldn't get into this book, I found the characters morally weak and the pace of the book very slow. It was so bad that I couldn't even finish, not worth my time.

This author has appeared in these pages before, as one of a small handful who brings far more to the legal thriller than simply an ingenious plot. He's an author, not a genre author, and I'm a fan.

Let's drop back in time a few years and a few novels to his second, CRITICAL MASS. Even then, he had the gift of observation, strong character creation skills, an ear for natural dialogue and excellent word choice. Meanwhile, the plot centers around uranium stolen from the former Soviet Union. Hmm.

Normally I'd give up after two sentences, or perhaps even read the back cover and put it back on the bookstore shelf unread, because it's just impossible to pull this reader into that subject matter. But since this is Steve Martini we're talking about, I read a full 10% before I gave up. Gerd Balke pulled ... Read More

Unlike lawyers Grisham, Turow, and Scottoline, turned writers, Steve Martini is a journalism graduate and writer who went on to become a lawyer! (Seems there ought to be a good joke in there somehow!) He must be doing fine, as his booklist now numbers eight (five of which comprise the defense attorney Paul Madriani series), with a ninth hardback due out late this year. Let's get real here folks -- this is his first book, and we thought, not bad at all.

In a very complex plot, almost shades of Clancy, we're quickly engrossed into the hunt for possible survivors of a 1942 blimp crash; a search for 16th century documents, possibly the journal of the explorer/pirate Francis Drake; the murder of the partner (and former {?} love interest) of the leading man, lawyer Sam Bogardus; and some other crimes and problems too numerous ... This one has a simple plot like "True Crime"- but it's nothing special. Badly needs savage editing as it's at least 100 pages too long. A good editor would have given it a double tap at inception.

I've read the whole Madriani's episodes and I think this is the less interesting. In general, Steve Martini is really bright in portraying the defense-prosecutor in court fight. All of his "trial-based" books are very entertaining. I can't say the same of this one - that is, in fact, a bit "far" from Martini's usual milieu. It is, nevertheless, a good reading, but don't expect Madriani at his best!

The sensible thing to do was grab the child and move to another state! Staying put was silly masochism. What could I expect of this novel after such a start?
