As already stated, this book doesn't get going until you are most of the way through, a book on channels and masks shouldn't have to describe all the other nuances of photoshop especially as one shouldn't be diving into this area unless they already have a basic understanding of all the tools and bridge etc to begin with. However when it does get down to it, it does it well and I would still recommend it if you are a novice.
As for the negative on Windows comamnds and the lack of Mac commands, come on! You only need to know two things to do it both ways already, Control=Command and Alt=Option/Alt key!! I for one am tired of reading the lines "Command on Mac, Control on PC" when every shortcut key gets mentioned in a book lately, just state the command equivalents at the beginning and get on with ... The book is informal, and easy to read. However, when working through exercises, occasionally some instructional steps are skipped. You go from Point A to Point B to Point D. What happened to C? C is necessary to achieve the final effect. Pretty sloppy.

Also, at times, some fairly involved steps are introduced to achieve an effect for no apparent reason. For example, on Page 80, while learning about the single column marquee selection tool, the author goes into a farily elaborate process for creating simulated woodgrain:

Choose Filter, Noise, Add Noise, 400. Choose Edit, Transform, Scale. A bounding box appears, drag the left and right side so noise fills the window. Choose image, Adjustments, Hue/Sturation. Select Colorize box, move the sliders until the image changes to the ... Read More

I've had Photoshop CS software on my wish-list for a long time, so when I picked up the book Photoshop CS Savvy for review, I had a great reason to finally purchase the software.

With over 700 pages and a CD-ROM, this book can seem daunting, yet it can easily be used by Photoshop beginners like me. In the "Introduction," the author says it like this, "It's for those of us who take photographs, draw, paint, and cut and paste pictures. It's for computer artists, graphic designers, Web designers, and printers. It is intended to help master the software, at whatever level you might be in the learning curve."

One of the first things I noticed was the books' layout. The book is divided into four parts, twenty-seven chapters, two appendices, a glossary, and an index. When dividing 700 pages ... Read More

5.Mastering Photoshop 6 by: Steve Romaniello, Stephen Romaniello

Books : Mastering Photoshop 6
Never used Photoshop before? Intimidated just by saying it? This book will rid you of all that. It starts off by giving a short tutorial using the tools Photoshop has to offer. After which, the tools of the interface are explained. As you progress through the chapters, you start to get an idea of how to properly employ Photoshop as you get more familiar with its tools. In short, you LEARN by doing. It even has a section on the blending effects and gives a good explanation on layers. I recommend this to the beginner and intermediate. Kudos to S. Romaniello.

The book has no cohesive message. It doesn't provide any guiding principles or other ideas that help photographers or web designers to build digital porfolios. Too much of the text is spent defining basic terms like JPEG and Photoshop and too little teaching relevant principles of design or any other topic that can further various artists understanding of the subject. Furthermore, nearly 1/3 of the book is spent asking the same five interview questions (how many hits do you get a week, how effective is your website at generating clients,) to a series of photographers, web designers, etc. This would be fine except the questions do not help advance any overarching messages in the book either. They seem to just hang there as an interesting side note. It appears that the author was far more interested in designing ... Read More

I was looking forward to learn a lot about Adobe Golive. Whata disappointment! You only master frustration and anger by readingthis book. The authors have gone through extensive effort and length to avoid explaining adobe golive. Seventeen chapters and I am still not sure how CSS and Dhtml that are powerful parts of the program work. The title is very misleading... You can learn more by reading adobe online quicktime tutorials or by buying the training CD...
