As with The Emperor of Ocean Beach, this book includes much detail about life in upper middle class black society. It is interesting but I find Mr. Carter's books a little wordy. His style invites skimming when the reader hits long descriptions and opinions of little relevance to the plot. The plot was very involved, as was the plot of Emperor, but in this case the characters were not as interesting and likable and believability was stretched for some of their behaviors and situations. The Emperor, I considered a wonderful book while New England White was good but not great.

"Palace Council" encouraged me, as a side assignment, to re-read history -- for instance, Hoover's methods, the Kennedy/Nixon election, Langston Hughes and Adam Clayton Powell's bio, Harlem's pecking order -- which added depth and background to the story. On the other hand, PC, much like "The Emperor of Ocean Park" and "New England White", is, at times, not only an arduous read, but also borderline not credible. Some good editing would both chop the length while making the story more believable. That said, I've enjoyed all three of Carter's books, probably PC the least, though.

A mostly excellent little romp through the trials and tribulations of an upper-middle-class black family after the patriarch Judge keels over and dies, leaving a bit of a mystery behind for one of his sons to figure out. Carter has a great way with language, but could use an editor to cut back on some of his longer-winded meanderings.

This novel was hard to understand. The story's direction was slow and painful for a group of lawyers. Throughout the novel are moments of ambiguity. The characterization of legal personalities in the novel left me disappointed. I am looking forward to the second novel with hopes of redemption.

Carter is a master of framing and providing a context for complex issues like integrity. This is NOT a preachy book with platitudes about the need for integrity. It IS about defining integrity, the situations where it will be tested, and ways to think about integrity as you make your own decisions. In the end, it is a powerfully enabling book that I have referred to and recommended to friends and colleagues repeatedly for many years.

Civility

This book is not a book of etiquette. It is an historical review, leading to how personal behavior affects our society. It is not a "feel-good" book about success or personal growth. It is spiritually aligned within the Judeo-Christian tradition, and makes a solid contribution in proposing the need of this influence in our society. It is a classic of contemporary thought, and could well be a textbook in a class on ethics in a Christian college. The actual issues of ethics (doing good) are thoroughly explained here. Highly recommended.

Stephen Carter's thesis is quite a noble one: he thinks that we as a society have taken religious freedom and morphed it into something of an anti-religion bias. The public square, for instance, seems to give less and less credence to arguments or ideas informed by religion. Pro-lifers or those opposed to gay marriage are written off as 'fanatics' or simply holders of weak, because religiously informed, positions. The establishment and free-exercise clause (which Carter DOES see as a wall of seperation between church and state) has increasinly been used to banish religion from the public square entirely.

This is all quite unique for me because I am an non-believer, probably unlike many reviewers here. Even as a non-believer (polite term for atheist) I can see the trivialization of religion in our culture and particularly ... Read More

Books : God's Name in Vain : The Wrongs and Rights of Religion in Politics
Stephen Carter is both eloquent and efficient in his writing, managing to make a topic as broad as the separation of church and state fit into one book. It's not a fast read, but it's definitely not a difficult one, either. The organization of the book keeps it from becoming confusing, despite having two different (though related) theses in one book. He also keeps the book interesting, as well: while he continuously refers to the past to justify his argument, he extrapolates enough to keep these events relevant to his argument, thereby keeping his book from becoming a mere retelling of history.

The theses I mentioned earlier are as follows:
1. There is "much right" with the inclusion of religion in politics.
2. If religion is included TOO MUCH in politics, religion will lose its best self.

He separates ... Read More

It isn't that they shouldn't, but some words, posed as category mistakes, don't seem to go together. For instances, consider waves and particles, "genomic environment" or, as is the case in the title under review, "social neuroscience." These odd couples seem to grind against each other, as if repelled to opposite places in long established categories like tectonic plates whose shifting juxtaposition shambles an established order. This antonymic phenomenon highlights a problem that has confronted science-makers stretching back at least as far as Plato and Aristotle and on to Descartes, Popper, and contemporary philosophers of science. The problem is this. To study, we take things apart, introducing vast vocabularies of particularization. To understand more comprehensively, we put these particulars back together, meshing, overlapping, integrating, and ... Read More

This erudite writer is one of my favorites. Having enjoyed his previous writings, this one is no exception.

He argues a salient point that the Declaration of Independence might certainly be more about government by the dissent rather than by consent. In this regard, he cites the section of the Declaration which speaks of repeated replies to dissent by continued injuries and disinterest.

He then relates this thesis through the three lenses of: Allegiance, Disobedience, Interpretation.

Making good points along the way, he concludes: If instead we celebrate, always, results over people, bureaucracy over democracy, and centralization over community, then, we are saying after all that we have no interest in the "repeated Petitions" of which the Declaration speaks, that we will, as our revolutionary forebears charged against ...
