I have been looking forward to this book since I heard about it - I usually like his short stories. Not so much this one. There really wasn't anything that was scary - occasionally thought provoking yes, scary no. The only story I really liked was the one about the stationary bike - and it was more of a black comedy.

What really bothered me in this book was the amount of violence towards women. Yes, I hear you laughing - that is usually a staple in horror stories in general and I can't escape the fact that Rose Madder, Dolores Claibourne and Gerald's Game were full of violence towards women. Maybe it disturbed me this time because there was so much of it in one place and it was so graphic, I can't quite put my finger on why it bothred me so much this time. Definately not ... Read More

I have read everything that King has written to date. Obviously, I'm a true fan and constant reader. I felt that DUMA KEY was very wordy at the beginning of the book. It took King almost half the book to develop the story line. To some this might be a bonus, as King becomes deeper than some of his past works where he's been a quick read. However, to others this slow start could mean abandoning the effort. By the last half of the book Duma Key grabs you in full King fashion.

I bought this hoping for a haloween scare but so far no scares. I'll admit I'm not done with the book but while the stories inside are good It doesn't really make me feel I've been visited by the living dead. I'll put it down and read some more another time.

In On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft Stephen King says that we must come to writing in almost any way but lightly. We may be angry or exhuberant or jealous or anguished. I repeat, as does he, we must come to the craft any way but lightly. This is a side of Stephen King I have neve seen before, and I like it. The book is a wonderful guide to the art, to the craft of writing. My book is new, but is already earmarked and looks worn with age, as all great books should. All true devotees to the craft of writing, all who know that the demands of writing are great, should own this book. It is a revelation.

Dear God this is the perfect apocalyptic novel ever! There is everything in this book really: antichrist, disease, violence, and Stephen King takes the time to give background to all of the characters in this novel! Yeah it was long. It took me five months to finish it, but it is worth the time!

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse is a series of dark future tales written between the 1970's and 2008 by some of the most talented writers in science fiction, fantasy and horror. The book is full of haunting visions of survival at the end of humanity, survival after a great change in humanity and survival after a great reshaping of humanity.

Of particular note, from my perspective was the extremely haunting The People of Sand and Slag by Paolo Bacigalupi. Without giving away the entire plot, humanity is certainly going to change - that is the only inevitable thing we can count on with the passage of time. Mr. Bacigalupi's vision of those changes haunts me. I am a dog owner and lover. If you are as well, it is likely you will be haunted by vision of what mankind becomes portrayed in this story. ... This isn't my favorite entry into the series; but then, all the rest of the books refer back to this one *a lot*, so it's essential to know what the characters have experienced between books 4 and 6. The only other one I'm not particularly fond of is book 6, with yet more trips into NYC and Maine and tangles with the mobsters. At least Father Callahan is given a mighty fine send-off! I guess King figured he owed Callahan a better ending than skulking out of Salem's Lot and disappearing.

Anyhow, this book riffs off of a Kurasawa movie (Seven Samuri), which was riffed off of one of Sergio Leone's Man with No Name westerns, and then by Hollywood in The Magnificent Seven. It's a nice nod to that particular Western story. It's obviously a good one, and it's good to see King's take on it.

I think didn't ... Read More
