I bought this book with the hope of finding a good upto date review of medicine. it fell far short from this. The book is dense with no diagrams, the heamatology pictures are in one corner along with other pictures, and not with the relevant chapters. I have read the cardiology section of the book, and i just saw one paragragh on CRT, the antiarrthymic drugs are bunched up together, with no drug-drug interaction, no mention of metabolism and there are no pros and cons of using each drug in a particular situation/condition.There is no mention of levosimendan in heart failure, GP2b/3a etc. let there be moe flow charts and pictorial representation. i hope the authors will realize this and they will put some more flesh to the bones. please include ECG and echo pictures so as to not only enhance ... I thought this book was very interesting and informative to a pre-med student. I'm not in med schools yet, but love to read about medical related things.

This book is the benchmark of bad textbooks. I refuse to believe the text ever saw an editor before it went into print; the authors - especially McPhee himself - wouldn't be able to recognize DIDACTICS if it came flying into his face; the text is extremely convulted written, confusing, unstructured, concepts are never connected, void of clarity, and in many instances just straight out wrong or self-contradictory; the book has no intention of actually conveying knowledge, instead it keeps digging into itself.

Also, do not believe the other reviewers who give this book 5 stars, they are not actual persons, but agencies paid by the publishers. Or, as I cannot actually attest to that, suffice to say anyone taking medical didactics seriously simply cannot reward this book 5 stars.

For the past several years, every other year, I have purchased the Lange Current. I use it frequently for a second opinion or to review a topic of treatment that I don't see in practice on a regular basis. It gives a good overview and I understand that if I want or need indepth information I will just go to a specialty reference specifically for a particular problem. It has reliable up to date information and I notice that others in my office use it from time to time.

I used UpToDate before I bought this book. UpToDate costs $195 per year if you are a student. This book costs under $60. If you don't need a large amount of detail, you can get away with using this book instead of UpToDate. You will save money (especially if you are a poor student) without sacrificing much quality. Buy the book new so you can get the online access. I bought the book and went straight to the online access and gave the book to one of my friends. It's definitely worth it since you don't want to lug around a book this big. The book has excellent content and has good internal med coverage. Some of the specialties are a little weak (UpToDate has the same problem), but this book was meant for the generalist. The images in the online version are very informative.

I love this book. It is so very comparable to the merck manual. It covers every topic beautifully and concisely including all the pertinent things you would need to know for any disease or pathology. I find myself always refering back to it when reviewing material or needing a refresher on certain topics. It is a bulky book so it is not a good book to carry around with you, but as a desk reference its a must have.

I am a first year PA student. I find Current a much better reference than Cecils Textbook of Medicine. It has quick easy to read sections on many diseases. The disease passages are well labelled with a few "Essentials of Diagnosis" at the top. Then the passage describes etiology, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings and treatment. Overall, a great reference.
