I imagine readers of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's weblog and books will thoroughly Understand how difficult it is to get just that perfect thing for a beloved fiber artist and have to WAIT to give it to them. So of course, I've peeked ahead, and this is going to be a well-loved daily calendar.
You read me right:
Daily.
Calendar.
I don't expect it to have hardcover book quality, or even necessarily keepability, the publisher has placed it righteously in that page-a-day calendar production quality. There will be pages ripped out and smacked on this board in the studio here, over the desk(s) at home and at work, and magnet-pasted to the fridge, for a while, and juicy lovely tidbits will be preserved. Which days' delights will my beloved knitteuse choose? I'm not telling you ... Read More

All of those great thoughts you've had about life and the cosmology of the universe, that have come to you while you had knitting needles in both hands, and couldn't find a pen anyway - well, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee wrote hers down. "Things I Learned from Knitting" is a sweet little volume of the thoughts that go through our heads while we are rescuing dropped stitches and turning cables.

Mistakes Don't Go Away Unless We Intervene.
"Now, time has passed and I have become a good knitter, having learned a great deal since those early abominations. I've gained skill and understanding, I've learned that gauge matters and that there are some colors that don't look good on me (or any human, really), and I know enough to correct my mistakes as I go along instead of knitting them into ... If you are a Knitter who takes their Knitting very seriously, you may not get a kick out of this book. The rest of us enjoy the fact that someone out there is telling it like it is... yes, knitters make mistakes, yes, we sometimes get obsessive, but we're all just trying to get along in a world that looks at people who play with yarn for fun like they're a few skeins short of a sweater. Thanks for the laughs, Steph.

I am truly disappointed in Pearl-McPhee's "Cast Offs". I'm giving it three stars, instead of two or one, only because if you've never read her material before, I think you'd like it more than I did. However, I've read her three other laugh-out-loud books, and this one dims by comparison. I feel her problem is that she starts off welcoming the knitter/reader to "The Land of Knitting", and writes "Cast Offs" from a travelogue point of view. Her attempt to be a witty commentary on knitting while remaining in this style seems forced for much of the book. Sometimes, it hits, as when she talks about traveling to foreign "embassies" (local knit shops in foreign cities), while other times it misses its mark (talking about different "diseases" a knitter may encounter while in the land of knitting (like ...
