I'm usually very skeptical of books with multiple authors as they rarely turn out to have either consistent quality or consistent pacing. So, I picked this up with very low expectations.

Needless to say I was very pleasantly surprised. It has the perfect combination of detail (which means that you're going to use it as a reference book for a long while), and clarity of explanations (which means that you're going to be the richer for it.)

At many times it does take the scenic route (e.g., it takes 2 chapters before you even install Tomcat), but for the most part, the information is well written and easy to read.

One example of the excellent detail of coverage - there's an entire section on verifying the integrity of the download using the MD5 checksum/PGP. ... Read More

Never programmed in java beyond the Hello World type application and bought this book. This along with one that covers learning the syntax of java and I have written two useful apps that I have on my phone.

I have something pretty complex as my ultimate goal (although text based - not a game) and feel confident this gives me enough to accomplish that goal.

Java's web technology has always been my fascination. This book opened up a whole new perspective on Java and JSP for me.
The book that I truly started learning JSP with is "More Servlets and Java Server Pages" by Marty Hall. That book breaks down piece by piece how it all works. It's a really great book. "Pro JSP" shows you how to exploit that knowledge to turn it into something truly useful. If you are a Java web developer you know that Java web applications can be slow and clumsy. Have you ever wondered how the sites like Amazon are written in Java and can handle millions of hits a day? Well, that book explains the technology behind those kinds of applications.
The book makes very extensive use of EL (not something I am very fond of). It shows you how far you can go with JSTL by utilizing ... Read More

The word "Beginning" in the title is optimistic at best. I would not recommend this book for someone new to JSP. I've made it through 14 chapters, and now I'm going to drop this one and find something else. The last several chapters have been extremely frustrating. Too many examples don't work, and many things are not well explained. I've had to find other sources such as java.sun.com to find good explanations for things that are quickly passed over in this book. And I'm a certified J2SE programmer, so I'm not exactly a beginner.

The only IDE that has been mentioned so far is NetBeans 3.6. That's hopelessly out of date. The order of the chapters doesn't even make sense. An exercise in chapter 5 wants you to create and deploy an application, but nothing is mentioned about deployment until chapter ... Read More

This book gives a speedstart in getting high level architecture of Tomcat 5. Its discussion, even though not comprehensive, can make you can tell the difference between a valve, a service, an instance, and a server.

However, this book fails to provide a tested and consistent example on setting up DBCP (Apache Database Connection Pooling). Seems the information was extracted only from Apache DBCP website and reworded (such as replacing jndi/myoracle to jndi/wroxTC5) WITHOUT giving actual tested examples. I have Tomcat 5.0.28 running and the DBCP example mentioned 3 pages in chapter 8 and another 3 pages in chapter 14 does not work. I went looking for errata in the website but couldnt find it in the publisher's website.

It is rather disappointing and discouraging when you put your trust ... Read More

While the book is excellent and informative, in typical wrox fashion they don't include the complete source code on their download. So I'd definitely give the book 5 stars but lacking the source code, and the fact the compilation fails in maven, has to bring the score down.

I thought to learn JSP just by reading this book. I read several review comments on this book and other books. Fairly thougt to buy this one on hope of better explanation.
Though I am new to JSP, but working on programming for 13 years.
1. I did not get a streamline explanation to start the first program. Someplaces exaplanation is too much, I was lost.
2. Explanation on Tomcat installation won't be helpful because of older versions.

Those have already known JSP TAG, Bean etc. it may be helpful for them. But purely it is not for beginners.

I have version 2 of the book and it is fantastic! Seems each of the experts wrote about his/her field and the result is very in-depth study. The book's coding is still actual though it dealt with IE 4 and 5. What I want is to find version 3 that deals deal the more current IE 6 release - but they probably never published it.

I would reccomend this book only to people who are new to Java Programming and want an overall treatise with something on everything possible server side. But for those who are already in this field for a while and want to build on their knowledge this book would be a big disappointment. The other main drawback of this book is its bulkiness.

This book does cover some of the topics like servlets in detail good enough for a serious programmer but most of the other topics introduced are not exhaustive enough for a serious developer.

To sum it up, rather buy books on individual topics and build a solid base than adorn your bookself with fancy Wrox books.
