I really liked Shannon Hale's "Goose Girl" (I expected it to be terrible - it was not). Banking on that, I picked up "Princess Academy" and the fact that Miri was a name I was once oddly obsessed with. The plot seemed sort of silly and the title ridiculous but I said, "What the hey, I'll give this over-girly looking book a shot."

Once again, as with "Goose Girl", I'm glad I gave Hale a chance. She's twice now managed to take seemingly stupid remakes of fairy tales into funny, absolutely enjoyable reads. "Princess Academy", while I guess not immediately based off of any fairy tale, reads like one with the princess, the prince, the evil no-good-doers, and the happy ending. This delightful story, written simply and clearly in such a way that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish, ... Read More

Goose Girl by Shannon Hall is like a realistic fairytale. Sure, it has its share of magic, but everything just feels so possible and there is such a struggle for finding one's place. Princess Anidora is such an inspiring character because her problems don't just solve themselves and she needs the help of others.
Ani, also known as Isi, is someone that you want to sympathize with because to be in her position just seems like there are so many obstacles to over come. And even though she seems shy and humble, she has such a strong soul and such perseverance. Her fight against someone who she once thought was her friend is so intense in every aspect. There are so many moments where you feel that Ani's fate is sealed, yet at the last moment where you realize that you are clutching onto something, ... Read More

The title of my book is Book of a Thousand Days written by Shannon Hale. This book is fantasy fiction.

When a 16 year old girl named Saren and 15 year old Dashti get locked up in a tower for seven years because Saren will not marry to the guy her dad wants her to. There are a million rats in the cellar and one night Dashti has a dream if the rats can get in they can get out! I don't want to give away the ending so you will just have to read it!

I would suggest this book to middle school girls. This is one of the best books I have read. It almost feels like you are there.

Who knew Rapunzel had it in her? All those years spent locked away in that tower, waiting for some handsome young prince to come along and rescue her --- wait, she didn't need a man to get out of that predicament?

It turns out Rapunzel was actually a kick-butt heroine who had a feisty temperament and tenacity --- or at least that's how a trio of Hales have envisioned her. Shannon Hale, a Newbery Award-winning children's book author, has teamed up with her husband, Dean, to write RAPUNZEL'S REVENGE, which turns the original Brothers Grimm tale on its ear. They brought in the help of talented illustrator Nathan Hale (no relation) for help fleshing out the story.

RAPUNZEL'S REVENGE offers a thrilling reimagining of the fairy tale --- just look at the cover to see Rapunzel looking like ... Read More

The book is more light-hearted than Shannon Hale's previous books, perhaps because this book's main character is a bit of a scamp. The book was enjoyable but didn't quit grab me the way her other books have.

The pacing and world-building were very good. The characters were engaging and changed realistically throughout the book. The romance in the story develops slowly. There was no sex, and I don't recall any cussing. Overall, I'd recommend this as a good, clean fun novel.

This bittersweet, funny slim little novel is first and foremost a love letter to Jane Austen, despite its well-deserved (and hilarious) dedication to Colin Firth. For those of us who, like the novel's heroine Jane Hayes, have happily reread all of Austen's novels over the years (except, as Hale points out, Northanger Abbey (Vintage Classics), which only got that one read), this story is a pleasant romp in Austenland. I was pleased with the way Jane questioned what in the world she was doing at what amounts to a Regency period fun park, with the way she alternately resists giving in to the fantasy and longs to dive in with reckless abandon. And I enjoyed the romantic comedy finish line ending.

I'm not sure why, but I've never liked this book as well as The Goose Girl. I'm not as fond of Enna, especially since she seems to fall for the bad guy so easily. I like the very end of the novel the best... perhaps because I like Isi so much better, and she had a much larger role there. I didn't like the war between the two countries in part because so much of it was from the point of view of Enna while she was under the influence of the fire language. I didn't like that it had so much sway over her. Fire doesn't just burn, and destroy, it can also warm, and provide light. The only aspects of fire Enna ever seems to receive are the negative ones.

Overall, apart from those negative things, it was a good story. I feel it's just very much a middle book, and has middle book syndrome.

The Enna Burning audiobook is definitely better than your average audiobook, however, it's not quite as good as I think it could have been. Cynthia Bishop is excellent as the narrator -- as she was when she narrated "The Goose Girl" -- the problem is with some of the voice actors who perform main characters. I was very disappointed to find that several of the main characters were no longer being performed by the same voice actors as in the audiobook of "The Goose Girl." Maybe they just weren't able to get the same actors back but, when I had just gotten used to the voices of the characters listening to "The Goose Girl," it was jarring to have to adjust to new voices. And I don't think the replacements are quite as good either. The voice actors who now perform Enna and Isi (née Ani) sometimes have such a similar tone to their ... Read More
