Does everyone know this book is a hoax? Am I the only member of the reading public who didn't know this? It's a terrible book, written by someone who hates reading for people who hate reading in a patronizing and revolting attempt to interest people who hate reading in reading. Yuk. The author has a lot in common with the author of The Lovely Bones: both terrible writers and cynical pompous uneducated jerks who revere nothing but their own ability to get one over on someone.

This book is a collection of Junger's articles. As such, it feels a little disjointed. The topics of the articles range from smoke jumpers who fight wildfires in the western U.S. to the diamond trade in Sierra Leone to the wars in Kosovo and Afghanistan. But if the topics seem unrelated, the book holds together in its sense of urgency and suspense, and the theme of a chaotic world in which the forces of nature and humanity constantly threaten to overwhelm the protagonists. Junger's style is sparse and to the point, but he paints vivid pictures and his page-turning narrative style makes it hard to put this book down.

As a friend and neighbor of the Goldberg family it was with trepidation I began reading Sebastian Junger's account of a crime that affected me deeply. I remember very well the circumstances regarding the murder of my classmate's mother. Surprisingly, the overwhelming evidence against Roy Smith, the convicted murderer, is almost completely omitted from Junger's version. The fact that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court upheld Smith's conviction is also missing from this poorly researched book. I was disappointed when I realized that Junger misrepresented the truth in order to tie his picture of himself with Albert DeSalvo to the murder of my friend's mother

Marc Parent has edited a collection that is an interesting and unique concept where authors have presented stories to be published that are not in their usual style. So as to avoid public expectations and criticism from hard core fans who are only satisfied with reading more or less the same thing over and over again they have kept their anonymity by not saying which of them wrote which story. Criticism of authors not producing the same old same old certainly does happen. Just read some of the tunnel vision reviews from some Harlan Coben fans of a non Myron Bolitair novels, Alex Cross fans of James Patterson novels, Dr Alan Gregory fans of Stephen White novels and even one of the authors in this collection Michael Connelly when he writes something that doesn't have Harry Bosch is often heavily criticised. ...
