Roseanne Clear is an ancient woman living in an Irish asylum to which she was committed "for social reasons" after she bore an out-of-wedlock child. She has been a resident for so long that no one knows how old she really is or exactly what the circumstances of her commitment were. The "secret scripture" of the title is Roseanne's narrative of her life, written on scraps with a pilfered pen and hidden under a loose floorboard. At the same time her story is unfolding, the psychiaitrist who heads the institution is slowly putting together a competing narrative of Roseanne's life. The asylum is closing -- Ireland's version of de-institutionalization -- and the terms of Roseanne's commitment must legally determine where she'll be placed next.

In the end, the two narratives come ... Read More

The story of Willie Dunne, a 5'6" 18-year old who feels its his duty to go to war in 1916, knowing in his heart, but unable to put into words why, that "he must play his part."

As the narrator, Willie captures on a personal level the massive scale of the horror that was World War I - the scenes of war - the chaos of the trenches, the surreal quality of the 1st sighting of the "yellow-tinged clouds" that killed everything in their path - the enormous number of casualties - exceeding 90% of the division in many places.

A secondary theme is Willie's struggle with his own sense of displacement because of the things he has experienced. He also struggles in a larger sense with an Irish sense of displacement. During this period, Ireland was facing its own fight - the fight for Home ... Read More

I was hesitant to read this book despite the recommendation of a friend and despite the accolades written here. How foolish. Reading this book was like sinking into a great mattress. I was near hypnotized by the beauty of the text which simply flowed. At times I was so overcome that I had to put the book down, the sadness of it all is wrenching. But never is the book depressing or is it hateful while describing the hate that people so easily engender. This is an extraordinary work.

I started reading this book with great trepidation, because I knew that I would probably compare it unfavorably, and unfairly, to Pat Barker's wonderful World War I trilogy (Regeneration, The Eye in the Door, and The Ghost Road. (The Ghost Road won the Booker in 1995.) But The Long Long Way Home has merits of its own: most notably, its potent, elegant writing.

I found that I reacted to this novel on two levels. Intellectually, it's nowhere near the quality of Pat Barker's trilogy. It's not as ambitious, of course, and in all fairness, it's one book rather than three. But as I read, I found myself asking, "So what? What is fresh here? What am I looking at differently?" The book didn't seem to have anything to say that any other World War I novel--any other war novel--hadn't already said.

It's no surprise that this play, one of the finest I have ever seen, won considerable international acclaim. I would not hesitate to rank it among the top ten masterpieces of 20th century drama.

Plays come and go, but this one, first produced at London's Royal Court in 1995, has all the hallmarks of a timeless treasure. It's drama, and poetry, full of unbelievably rich characterizations and history of Ireland's Time of Troubles.

Thomas Dunne, the seventy-something Da, anchors the play firmly, though not exactly in the play's here and now, about 1932.

Three of Da's four children have relegated him to an Irish county home, not for lack of love. No, Da's gone mad, as his effervescent lapses into the past make altogether real.

He is not so mad, though, not to know the truth of things, ... Read More
