star wars: the force unleashed is another attempt at a multi-media event by lucas arts like their mediocre attempt with shadows of the empire in the 90s. don't get me wrong, the effort they put into the event was mediocre, i actually enjoyed shadows; but this isn't a shadows review...

this time around we've got a video game/book/graphic novel combo, with one lego spaceship and one action figure (that i know of) thrown in, almost as an insulting after-thought.

but let me just talk about the main offerings. they all complement each other, but are lacking in their own merits, so i will simply review them all.

GAME: i wanted to give this game more than a 3, i really did. but with amazing games like dark forces and jedi knight coming from lucas arts more than ... Read More

This book was the first book that I read on emotional change and transition (almost 20 years ago). I have recommended this book to hundreds of people because I have experienced the impact that understanding how to cope with change and transition can have on an individual.

I was fortunate enough to spend a week studying with Mr. Bridges at the CapeCod Institute in 2002 after the launch of his sequel, The Way of Transition. The course was targeted for the helping professions to offer perspective on how people cope with life change and more importantly, how we can support them through it. I was one of the few management consultants in the room amongst pastors, nurses, therapists, teachers, non-profit directors, etc. Needless to say, I was blown away by how limited my view was on the ... I'll list the GOOD, then I'll list the Not-So-Good (aka. BAD).

The best two things about this book are:

1) A decent amount of images therein show the models in clothing (cloaks, some street clothing).
2) There's some decent reference of models holding weapons in "battle" poses.

That's it, really...

The *not* good (ie. BAD) things about the photograph are as follows:

1) The images are SMALL. Even the ones on the enclosed CD-ROM. Seems like the largest they get is around 700-800px on the longest side.

2) The camera's focal length causes the subjects to look distorted (ie. Huge hands close to the lens, tiny feet far away). For example:

3) Only 4 models total. And two of them don't ... Read More

Harry S. Truman's life story in a short, accessible biography. That's the premise of The American Presidents Series, and this is one of the most recent entrants in the stable. The late Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. was the series editor. In his introduction to each book in this series, he says (Page xvi): "The men in the White House express the ideals and values, the frailties and the flaws, of the voters who send them there. It is altogether natural that we should want to know more about the virtues and the vices of the fellows we have elected to govern us. As we know more about them, we will know more about themselves."

The book begins by noting that, traditionally, the 20th century presidents deemed to be great or near great include: Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and ... Read More

I must admit, I've only recently began getting back into D&D. I've always enjoyed playing it, but never really played (let alone ran) Forgotten Realms. Most people would tell me it's crap, or it's too much work to do. Needless to say, I'm finding it quite useful. The modifications for the general races are one twist to making new characters for players. New magics and specializations for classes give characters a little bit more of a reason to try new things. Plus, any free maps are very cool.

My only dislike (although quite necessary to game in Faerun) is the background on the world (literally takes up 2/3 of the book).

If you want to game in this world, this is the book you'll definitely want. But it can be useful for running different campaigns as well.

Finally, the Force Heretic trilogy reaches the point, the characters actually get somewhere, and we can move on to more plot impacting, final novels of the New Jedi Order. As with many reviews, this one does contain spoilers.

Like the previous two books, Force Heretic: Reunion, follows three story lines: Luke, Mara, Jacen, Danni, Saba, Tekli, Captain Yage, and the crew of the Widowmaker searching for Zonama Sekot, the living planet that is supposed to play a key part in the war; Leia, Han, Jaina, Jag, Tahiri, Twin Suns Squadron, Captain Mayn, and the crew of the Pride of Selonia continuing their quest to reestablish communications in various regions or the galaxy; and Nom Anor taking up the role of Prophet in a Jeedai heresy uprising on Yuuzhan'tar.

Honestly, this was probably the most pointless book within the New Jedi Order so far. It's great that the authors wanted to bring back some characters from books past (Truce at Bakura) and give the readers an idea of what has happened to those characters and planets since the Yuuzhan Vong War started, but the events in Force Remnant II: Refugee are ultimately irrelevant to the overall NJO story. As with many reviews, this one does contain spoilers.

My biggest complaint with the book is the lack of the Yuuzhan Vong in general. The Yuuzhan Vong have been the main (and, for the most part, only) antagonists of the New Jedi Order series. Without them playing the role of primary antagonist, Refugee just doesn't seem to fit in with the other books in the NJO. If it was separate from the series, my opinion ... Read More

Warning: This review will contain spoilers. While Force Heretic I: Remnant wasn't the best in the NJO, I hardly think it was the worst. To start with, the cover art for both this book and the others in the Force Heretic trilogy is beautiful and the synopsis on the back is certainly very intriguing.

Unfortunately, and much to my dismay, both the cover and the summary are very deceiving in terms of what actually happens in Remnant.

The plot is broken into three separate stories: Luke, Mara, Jacen, Danni, Saba, and Tekli looking for Zonama Sekot; Leia, Han, Jaina, Jag, Tahiri, and the Twin Sun Squadron venturing into regions of the galaxy that have been cut off from the rest of the universe via communication problems early in the war; and Nom Anor joining a Jedi faction on Yuuzhan'tar in hopes that ...
