Great exploratory read for those interested in what the first year of law school is like at an prestigious institution. Accessible enough to imagine yourself in the everyday shoes of the writer. It helped me, to an extent, form decisions about where I chose to attend law school. Other recommendations available on Amazon:
"The Bramble Bush" by Karl Lewellyn
"The Paper Chase" by John Jay Osborn

This was not one of ST's best novels. It tried to mix law with mystery. The "Limitation" refers to whether a crime can still be successfully prosecuted after a certain period of time has passed i.e. whether the limitation period has passed. There was a little bit of philosophical posturing around the subject but not enough to warrant much interest or excitement.

This is a concept, which might be marginally interesting to lawyers, and I am one - so it was slightly interesting. But to all non-lawyers? I doubt it.

The mystery story line centred on a spate of evil sounding emails to a Judge -and the hero of our story. There were some half arsed attempts to track down the sender - but it hardly got a head of steam. Quite honestly it was an incredibly weak story line.

For his first work of fiction, Scott Turow opted for that creature of an infinite number of crime noir books - the innocent man falsely accused. But PRESUMED INNOCENT is not noir, falling instead into the more generic genre of standard mystery. Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor in a fictional Midwestern county, becomes the center of suspicion when Carolyn, a former co-worker and lover, turns up dead. That Carolyn seemed like the type of woman who would have collected a number of enemies at the point in her life when she died, many of whom might have been happy to do the ghastly deed, seems not to dampen anyone's enthusiasm about pointing at Rusty instead.

Turow takes us through several plot twists and legal maneuvers. Rusty is, of course, a lawyer and knows the system. But so is Turow, the author, and his knowledge of ... Read More

A particular phrase used by the main character in this novel is "there are no victims." In this novel, there are no heros.

This novel is highly entertaining, fast-paced and in the end, a little sad. I will not spoil the ending by telling it but suffice to say, there are real good guys - or gals - in this story. In fact, the individuals whom society looks up to uphold the law have clay feet and even looser morals. If the reader has a low opinion of lawyers, they will come away with an even lower opinion. Upholding the law is a far away third consideration for being a lawyer. Money and winning - at the expense of lying, twisting words, and shading the truth - are the top two considerations.

The main thing I enjoy from Mr. Turow's writing is his ability to give different voices to his characters. None of them ... Read More

Several years in the past, "Squirrel" Gandolph was convicted of a nasty triple murder. Now, he is on death row awaiting execution. His conviction, it appears, was based on circumstantial evidence and a signed confession. Squirrel, however, is mentally challenged. Is his confession legitimate or was he coerced? He now says he is innocent, and Arthur Raven, a lawyer more adept and experienced at corporate law than criminal defense, is handed the pro bono case.

A number of other readers have panned REVERSIBLE ERRORS on the basis of not caring about any of the characters. I can sympathize. All of the major characters are flawed. All have major issues in their lives. For starters, Gandolph is a petty thief who probably belongs in jail. For me, though, it is the flaws in all the characters here that makes them human and gives them their ... Read More

Excellent, excellent book. Essential, even.
Everyone should read it.
See, because my own views on the topic were very... elementary. And the topic itself is anything but elementary. The issue of capital punishment is not easily dealt with, it is not rudimentary. It is very intricate. It's convoluted.
It's a matter of life. And death.
It is ignorance to say, "I believe in it" or "I don't believe in it" without examining what is involved in choosing either decision. And here are 125 pages that are a great introduction into the matter.

Turow, a respected criminal lawyer [and bestselling author of crime-novels] was one of fourteen experts Governor George Ryan of Illinois appointed to serve on his Commission on Capital Punishment. While in office as governor, Ryan declared a moratorium on executions in the ... Read More

C.J. Box, Jeffery Deaver, Elmore Leonard, Ed McBain, Walter Mosley, Joyce Carol Oates, R.T. Smith, and Scott Wolven. Scott Turow doesn't write much short fiction, but man can he pick them. This might be the best volume yet. It took me a while to start buying them, but they've turned out to be the premiere of the Best American Series, many years it is better than BASS or BAE or BANRR. Definitely a good buy.

If you have glanced at the other reviews, you know that the main problem with this novel is that it mixes good court drama with endless and boring reminiscences about the 1960's.

To actually enjoy the novel instead of dying of boredom, read the chapters where the characters are at court. Skip everything else, except, at the end, "Summer 1995 - NILE" and pages 813 through 817.

The court drama is actually quite good, IMHO. The tricks of the sneaky defense lawyer are very interesting and quite enjoyable.

Four stars for the court drama, zero stars for everything else. Average result: Two stars.

Scott Turow knows how to bend the language to suit his purpose. He shapes it to create his characters. He peers into their minds, their foibles and weaknesses.

His narrative edges into the dark recesses of human sexuality, the arrogance and self-doubts of the lawyerly class and how it impinges on each of us. (Which of us hasn't lapsed into forbidden places and trembled before the might of The Law that kept us from it?)

Turow packages it within the limits of The Law, even as he recognizes what a corrupt cesspool it is. His characters are flawed, just like the person on the street, people lurking and peering at each other.

Yet there is a sameness to his characters: women lawyers flooded with venality, be they lesbian or libidinous heterosexuals. Furious women populate his narrative.

His panting male suitors ... Read More
