I was required to read this book for a college art class, and hated it. I'm not a comic book fan, but I also don't detest them either. I found the book to be mildly interesting, but just way too reptitive. The author goes on and on about the same things for way too long, practically beating the subjects to death. The author tries to get the reader to take things in the book so seriously, it seems a little ridiculous.

This is a great tutorial and reference for anyone considering writing a comic book for the first time (or perhaps someone more experienced who'd like to get a fresh perspective and/or deeper understanding of fundamental structure). Scott has taken all those elements that go into making a good comic book (that you've probably noticed subconsciously but couldn't put into words) and laid them bare with expert analysis.

The analyses and guidelines are presented in a light-hearted, comic book format that is both entertaining and enlightening. You won't find yourself getting sleepy or distracted while reading this book - and you will understand every concept with perfect clarity, even if you are a complete novice.

Get this book! I found it at my local library and read it twice (cover ... Read More

Today Scott McCloud is best known as the author of Understanding Comics - an in depth analysis of how and why comics work. Understanding Comics and its sequels established McCloud as one of the premier comic book scholars. He really understands how sequential art (comic books, manga, comic strips etc) can work and can be made better.

But before all that, he was a struggling independent comic creator slaving away on Zot.

This is a love story between a fearless adventurer from a Flash Gordon-art deco world and an angst-filled teen from a small town in ours. The action moves from jet boots and laser beams to high school drama and both are very good.

This reprint collection is a bit odd because it skips the color issues of Zot, which set up the whole improbable situation ... Read More

Reinventing Comics has one strength that makes it timeless: Scott McCloud systematically explains what was wrong with the comics that were created through the end of the 20th century. When he switches over to what's needed to overcome those issues, the book becomes more idealistic than practical in many areas. The book is particularly hobbled by a limited appreciation of how comics might blur with (and be surpassed by) electronic gaming.

His basic optimism is that the comics genre can expand to satisfy more readers' needs by:

1. Becoming more like literature.
2. Developing as an art form.
3. Providing creators with more rights.
4. Changing the industry business model to serve everyone's needs better
5. Improving public image.
6. Reducing the heavy hand of governmental ... Read More

7.24 Hour Comics by: Scott McCloud, Neil Gaiman, Steve Bissette, Al Davison, Alexander Grecian

Not to be confused with Scott McCloud's fantastic Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics books, this a compilation of the best 24-hour comics done as part of his initial 24 hour comics challenge (in which artists are given 24 hours to create a full 24 page strip).

This is an extremely fast read (I finished it in an hour), it's fun if you like dark and different kind of stuff. Some of the authors have some pretty twisted imaginations.

As comics, they are rough and unpolished. However, if you have an appreciation for the form, they are interesting in the context of the 24-hour challenge.

After a lifetime of loving graphic novels I ran into Will Eisner compáratively late and it was a revelation. He draws people better than anyone could see them with their own two eyes, and his sketches of New York makes me want to go back to The Big Apple so I could cry with it!! Also, no matter how satirical he chooses to be, his compassion with the whole big muddle shines through in every panel on every page. Nobody in graphic arts should ever miss out on Will Eisner - he is a genius!

People hoping to gain an understanding of how to write comic books really couldn't find a better source than "Panel One," the previous volume edited by Nat Gertler collecting comic book scripts and roughs by various creators. "Panel Two" is more of the same, but not as polished. There are more of the "thumbnail" versions of scripts, and some that are so detailed it's almost like reading the comic itself. Standouts in this book are Gail Simone's hilarious script for "Killer Princesses" and Scott McCloud's thumbnail script for "Zot!" (This was one of the super-detailed ones, it had me wanting to find the issue that followed it to find out how the story ended!) Others are interesting, such as the classic "Fatman" script -- but that one, unfortunately, was missing several pages. It was interesting to see the juxtoposition of the original ... Read More

10.Zot! Book 2, Issues 11-15 & 17-18 by: Scott McCloud

Books : Zot! Book 2, Issues 11-15 & 17-18
Zot's great, you won't be buying this book without knowing a little about this strangely wholesome upbeat & optimistic superhero. All the angst is supplied by jenny his self doubting human girlfriend, and even she's pretty cheerful most of the time. The book is a straightforward copilation of Zot issues 11-15 and 17-18, but unlike volume one this book is in black and white, so be warned, but I still enjoyed it.
