I have been a fan of Robert Wagner for quite some time. I read his book in about 3 or 4 days because once I started I just couldn't put it down. He talked about how he got into the movies, the TV shows he was in and the frinds he made along the way. He opened up about how Natalie Wood died and about how truly devastated he was and about all the people that helped him through that terrible period in his life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

How and when did so many great Americans get thrown into the dust bin of history? We really need hero courses in our schools to provide kids with information on these grand, legendary figures. Instead, we work to undermine what little hero worship there is. John D. Rockefeller is one such figure, Teddy Roosevelt another. No doubt, one could come up with a dozen such creators of new worlds, but instead they are belittled and destroyed by neglect. Louis b. Mayer has his detractors and no doubt deserves them, but the man we are talking about created one of the greatest arts institutions in the world. Unlike the founders of theatres and ballet companies, however, this great institution will last forever, or certainly as long as the great movies he produced can be preserved. The studio itself is ... Read More

Books : Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford
Many books were written about Jonh Ford.
All of them tell the story and the profile of the man.
But John Ford was more than that.
His life is the beginning, but the book doesn?t take it as a experience or example for his films.
The exploration is a long trip in this book.
The readers are going to find the artist who control
everything around and his mind to think faster than others.
He made no more than one take, sometimes to have completely control about the film, not suffering the torture of the film process and the editing.
It?s a strange story about the man who won four Academy Awards?
for Best Directing but he never won an Oscar for one of his western films.
The book explores how he created the images and how he felt involved in those ... Read More

I was never too big a John Ford fan, just got this from the library out of curiosity, and I'm definitely going to purchase it. Its such a beautiful book, with not only large photos which capture the most visually awesome moments from all of Ford's many movies, including a revealing array of moments from lost films. Really illustrates Ford's genius in two ways: you can read it once with the margins, absorbing each large picture and its caption, then more in depth by reading the text in the middle by Eyman, who wrote a good book on Ernst Lubitsch amongst other things.

This biography of the geat Ernst LUBITSCH is really better than the overrated book "THE LUBITSCH TOUCH" by WEINBERG. It is an alive book by a writer who really admire the director and the man. It also gives some good reviews and information about Lubitsch's geat films. My only complain is that the autor doesn't really develop the German period (which is still underrated and considered as "vulgar" - "thanks" to the famous critic Lotte EISNER), like all the books about Lubitsch, it focuses on the masterpierces of the 30's and the 40's (the most known period and the best of course). But buy it, if you want to know more about LUBITSCH/the man (and prefer this book to Weinberg's one). About LUBITSCH/the director, buy the excellent book by S. RAPHAELSON "3 screen comedies" (if you can find it !) and J. HARVEY's "American ... Read More

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Speed of Sound: Hollywood and the Talkie Revolution, 1926-1930
"The Speed of Sound: Hollywood and the Talkie Revolution" examines the rapid transition from silent to sound films that transformed the American film industry between 1926 and 1930. In just 4 years, Hollywood witnessed "the extermination of an art form at the height of its power -something unprecedented in history", as the booming business of silent pictures was replaced by talkies, and the nature of films, filmmaking, and the film business were reinvented. Early talkies weren't nearly as good as their silent competition, but audiences enthralled by the new technology didn't care. They wanted sound. And movies as we know them emerged triumphant.

Scott Eyman presents the upheaval in five parts, each dedicated to one year in Hollywood's transition period. The occasional digression brings us up to speed on ... Read More
