This is a good book for those who are beginning to introduce themselves to the world of formal paganism. I am not Wiccan so I can't say how it measures up to the religion but there is a lot of good information for those who don't know what path they will take but at least want to try something. It's not condescending in tone rather it's warm and inviting, with undertones of understanding. It also is not 'baby talk' so the reader can feel mature enough to take the information seriously and perhaps not so strange performing some of the rituals inside. I like it.

I have owned and used this book for years. Of all of Cunningham's books this one is by far his best, most accurate, most researched, etc. I understand that he was/is a botonist, and that care is clearly communicated in this edition. Furthermore, the back index pages are invaluable, breaking herbs down by their planetary and astrological associations is really well done. If you are looking to learn more about Pagan, Wiccan, Neo-Pagan herbs from a primarily European Stand point, this book is excellent.
However, once I purchased a copy of Hoodoo Herbs and Root Magic by cat yronwode, my expectations of a magical herb book went up by more then a few notches. Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic contains more information for American herbal practitioners, and many many many more useful examples ... Read More

This is coming from someone who studied witchcraft for years. I suppose this book is easier to follow because it's dumbed down. There are basic ideas for making your own spells at the back of the book. They seem fun and nifty, and would be cool, except for the major fact that spells don't do anything. Once a person realizes this, spells lose all of their appeal.

There is lots of information on which herbs, stones and colors are "helpful" for whatever thing you want. Of course there is no scientific proof that any of these things will help you (with the exception of a few herbs that have medicinal value) other than being aesthetically pleasing, but collecting all these nifty things is the materialistic part of wicca. Wiccans then contradict themselves by saying that you really don't ... Read More

Was I ever disappointed by this! When I saw the word "encyclopedia" I assumed that's what it was, and that it was going to be a good one. But the information within is terribly scarce. The author seems to have picked only his favorites to include, when really all stones and metals should (In my opinion, even if they're not expensive or popular) be covered at least in passing, and left out a variety of information about the materials themselves and instead talked about just the more common magical uses and folklore. Anyone looking for information on stones, crystals, and the like can get better than this.

I'm not a big fan of Scott Cunningham's writings.Yet,this was an interesting spellbook on house blessings. Many people will have a priest or pastor bless a house,to bane evil spirits away. This book is for those seeking a neo-pagan touch to this hearth tradition. There is some folklore information, but not much profound pagan history.I would still recommend this book.It has many good ritual ideas and makes a great house-warming present.Your rooms are your sacred spaces.Your living room, your bedroom, your kitchen and even your reading room ,all have a character of their own. One's personality is a strong force, during one's lifetime and after death. That's why we believe some buildings are haunted by spirits. The protective spells provide a buffer zone between our physical world to an outer spiritual level. And free ...
