I enjoy the increasingly popular and demanding form of the short-short and flash and wish there were more collections like these. Deb Olin Unferth's "Minor Robberies" is, far and away, the strongest book of the bunch, and it's this collection I'm focusing on and awarding 5 stars. The other two have their merits, but having read Manguso and Egger's other work, I don't think the flash is their forte. Deb Olin Unferth's pieces are strange, cubist, experimental, funny, frightening. Some of them aren't stories at all, but assemblages of mercurial thought. Others evince the clear influence of Diane Williams and Lydia Davis, among others, but that's not a bad thing. My publishers always tell me to refrain from titling my books in any other language than English, and yet Sarah Manguso has found a wide audience for her poetry even when her book has a Latin name. I like it, for it gives the book a sort of ancient Ruskin feeling, or Carlyle, something very solid you can sink your teeth into. In addition we are more likely to respond to a plea like "stop, stranger," when we hear it in Latin. Manguso's writing seems fast on its feet, colloquial and speedy like that Mineola Prep boy Frank O'Hara idolized, and yet it has a quiet slow side to it, its long lines sometimes slowing to a crawl by the time they meet the right margin of the page, thus matching the request its title makes, as if to say, if you will be still, so will I. It's not often in the world of Amazonia that one finds a work of art that has received five star reviews from every reviewer. But Sarah Manguso truly deserves the accolades. Her poems are sinewy and funny and unpredictable (until you memorize them). What a deft hand she has in crafting these gems. I agree with the reviewer who lamented so much of modern poetry's self-seriousness. Well, you won't find that here. And yet, for me she is a poet to be taken very seriously, if you know what I mean.
