I was happy to spend a few hours reading Sandra Tsing Lo's amusing opinions on public schools, friendship, scented soups and pathetic baby boomers because I am in a similar place in my life right now. As an added plus, Loh also mentioned my hero, Richard Feynman, whose autobiographical books (Surely You Must Be Joking, What Do You Care What People Think, etc.) surreptitiously give excellent advice on how to encourage a child's curiosity. Although I admire Loh's intelligence, honesty and rage, I didn't care for her sophomoric writing style and probably wouldn't buy her other books.

To be honest, there's so much stuff in this book, subjects all over the map, that I'm having trouble writing a review. Every subject hit me a little differently. I found myself getting extremely bored on one tale, and then immensely enjoying another. That I had trouble getting past the first 30 pages had no bearing on how much I enjoyed the middle 10, or indeed that story about the writing workshop, which came near the end and was one of the best. R.A. Salvatore said that you know you are really a writer only if you just can't stop, and Sandra Tsing Loh makes this point wonderfully. I found this book both funny and touching, a poignant story that drew a vivid picture of Los Angeles. It's set in the time of the Rodney King-related riots, so it might seem a little dated by now, but I still find it a lovely story.

This book is horrible. It's not funny; it's not enlightening; it's not a literary treasure. I struggled to finish this book. I do not recommend it.

Picking this up nearly a decade after its original publication is a fun treat, for exploring "the way we were" and seeing how some things never change. Some reviewers have claimed you need to live in LA and be aware of pop culture to understand this book, and to some degree, a familiarity with her subject matter does help, but I think the book is overall very accessible. It's a series of essays, so if you run into one that doesn't do it for you, browse on to the next. Some of these were magazine pieces, and I can imagine reading them in Jane magazine back in the mid-1990's. Loh takes on subjects ranging from the interior of IKEA to being a cheap but demanding consumer, her failed modeling attempts, an expose on a Palm Spring lesbian conference, and her father's on-going battles with his neighbors.
