This book was a bad read. It did show that the author probably has vast knowledge of world history and geography but at the same time showed his strong bias towards racial and religious nature of the world. The book makes some very simplistic judgments about the historical nature of conflict and added huge amount of weights towards some abstract "civilizational" construct of human life. Humans are way more complicated and driven a lot by nationalistic and regional concerns then this book realized. I found reading this book quite a waste of time.

There should be a law aganist any one being as smart as Samuel P. Huntington. He's just too smart! I bet he's also very nice! On the jacket of this book I see the words "National Identity." I think there is no longer any such thing, we will just melt away into one big arguement. It will be Peak Oil and tribal politics that will push us over the top. There will not be a United States (not 50 states anyway), by 2035. I hope anyone reading Mr. Huntington will also read "The Path to National Suicide" by Lawarence Auster. Samuel Huntington's writings have always been incisive and animated by a spirit of the author's stupendous labor and a burning desire to project a true perspective of topics. The Soldier and the State is no exception.

Every human society and for that matter every human civilization have evolved round this single issue of striking a balance between the civilian and the miltary sector and hence the debate rages round key political thoughts like liberalism and realism. This age old riddle is diificult to solve and the lone super power of the new millennium is still searching for an answer to this on a national and international level: whither hard power or soft power?

Huntington's account of civilian and military history is studded with hard facts and comprehensive research works ... Read More

"The Third Wave" by Samuel Huntington is a good introduction into democratization studies. Huntington, same as in his other books, uses a light style without too much specialist vocabulary and gives numerous fascinating examples from the history of the countries that underwent systemic transformation after 1974. Since his book is a comparative study, though, it leaves out many details crucial for understanding the specific path of democratization adopted in a given country. It also does not pay enough attention to the process of consolidation which has just began when the book was published. "The Third Wave, however, is just the right book for a beginning democratization student. I think even the critics of "The Clash of Civilizations" will be satisfied with "The Third Wave", which is less ideological and more ... Read More

Well, we are very carefully approaching a point of actually *applying objective standards* to how well cultures allow their populations to self-actualize. As we shrink in horror from the idea, let's just have a peek inside this book.

Lawrence Harrison has the requisite progressive pedigree to pull this off.

A few interesting give-and-takes in the book.

A few VERY OBVIOUS cultural issues left out.

The book could have been much, much worse. For the most part, these folks kept their post-modernism under control and wrote in a comprehensible manner.

Not entertaining, but not horrid.

Reading this book was like opening a window in a stuffy room to get a breath of fresh air. The stuffy room is the current public discourse surrounding "democracy" and "civil society." The fresh air is Huntington's discussion of the phenomena of political modernization around the globe in the face of revolution and terror (not a new phenomenon). Although dating from the 1960s, the insights are still fresh. Basically, Huntington argues that order is essential to modernization, that reforms can catalyze revolutions and civil war if applied in the wrong way to the wrong people (Urban Elites), and that there is nothing inevitable about people's love for democracy or progress. Leaders have to lead, that's what they are for. Ataturk comes our very well in this book, as does Lenin, somewhat surprisingly to this reader, because ... Read More

This short book does an excellent job of providing the reader with both sides of the "West vs. the Rest" debate. In addition to Huntington's essay, originally published in the fall of 1993, there are several counter-essays that argue against Huntington's original "Clash of Civilizations?" The book is finished off with another essay by Huntington, a counter to the counter-essays, entitled "If Not Civilizations, What?" Even though the essays were all originally published in the early 1990's, alot of their arguments still ring true in the world we live in today.

In this book, Samuel Huntington, who, whether one likes him or hates him has been one of the most commented upon political scientists of the last generation takes on American politics: their realities versus their illusions, promise versus practicalities. And on the whole, he is successful at raising issues: although the book is almost twenty years old, it has managed to stay surprisingly current and valid and still remains though provoking.

I'd reccomend this book to anyone interested in US politics or current affairs but especially to people on the liberal/Huntington-hating typically side of the spectrum, because after reading this book, one might become much more pro- this author. It's striking at times how much he seems like Howard Zinn, etc. in this particular book.....

Good overview of the theories and impact of globalization. I also recommend Haley's "Multinational corporations in political environments: Ethics, values and strategies" to understand the limits of the economic powers shaping our society.
