One thing the creators at Marvel are good at is creating storylines that rock. They've done it over and over. Recently they did the House of M, where Wanda created a world where mutants were accepted, ruled. Of course, like all these alternate timelines, it was fixed, only this time The Scarlett Witch created a world where mutants don't exist. Except they do. But only a small number. This takes place after the event and keeps the story going.

The Age of Apocalypse satisfies the inherent "What-If?" cravings that most readers are prey to: what is professor Xavier had died and his dream along with him? The Age of Apocalypse answers this questions in the most dramatic way possible.

First off, the technical issues: as mentioned, although this is labeled Book 2 by Marvel, it is in fact "Book 1", with the actual Book 1 containing one-off or self-contained stories that are not continuous in the main storyline. You may pick up this book without the previous one and not feel like you just jumped in midway.

... assuming you are already familiar with the X-Universe. There are at least 50 Characters in this Graphic Novel, almost all of whom are modified versions of existing characters in the mainstream Marvel Universe. As ... Read More

in volume 4 the age of apocalypse comes to an end in the issue xmen omega. however for some reason there are more issues included afterwards that really have little to do with AoA. the AoA series is great but i think these collections could have been better. they could have left out some of the stuff in volume one and all the stuff after xmen omega in volume 4 and made it into three volumes.

A fine (if not great) first half, followed by a second half made up of junk. If I want a Marvel Encyclopedia, I'll buy one. Lower the price and lose the last part!

Kirkman is a really great writer. Really! But this is, far and away, some of the weakest XMEN stories of all time. The art is horrible, the story boring, and in one fell swoop, the Ultimate universe takes ten steps back. Really, really poor series now. i would rather they cancel UX at this point.

I'm not sure why Marvel puts out these "Ultimates Annuals" omnibus books, since all of these stories are already available in the regular individual Ultimates series. This one's okay -- it has a Captain America-Falcon team-up with a WWII Nazi tie-in, the FF trouncing Mole Man in a muddled epic, while Spidey's story is probably the best of the lot (but that's because "Ultimate Spider-Man" is the only Ultimate book that's really held up.) I really did not like this X-Men story, in which Nightcrawler is portrayed as a mentally broken creepo-stalker guy who is held in contempt by all the other X-dudes. Huh? What? Why? Oh, well. Whatever. Basically, this book has some okay reading in it, but you could also skip it and buy the individual titles instead.

picked this up from the library....and pretty glad i didnt drop some moneys on this. its an average story at best....not what i expect from the writer that brings me amazing captain america stories every month. bru's last arc on uncanny was also a let down. its weird.

the book never really gets going...the morlock threat never really seemed...well, threatening. masque is a cool character, but all the dialogue seems cookie cutter and uninspired. nothing against brubaker himself, but this seems like he's phoning in his scripts on this one.

the art itself...my first exposure to larroca. at first, i was impressed by how he handled the characters...but about a quarter of the way thru the book, i started noticing some things.....like how he would photoshop REAL photos into the art. ... Read More

I can barely slog my way through this book. Heavy on dialogue, light on sense, plot, story. This is the reason that the X-men needed a reboot, which thankfully was done by Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon. This book is a horrific collection of stories written by Chris Claremont, Scott Lobdell, sadly, Robert Weinberg and Joe Pruett, both of whom show much more talent when not doing X-men comics.
