Russell Shorto's Descartes Bones is a compelling read. Building his account of the conflict between faith and reason around the mystery of Descartes bones, he crafts a well-paced examination of the era that created our modern world. But this is not tiresome philosophical treatise or plodding historical account. I have degrees in philosophy and history, but Shorto presents a side of Descartes (and his legacy) that does not receive adequate coverage in a class on epistemology or on European history. The is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. Russell Shorto brings to life the history and the characters of the period. I have already given this book to several people as a gift. They have all thanked me for it. A truly enjoyable read.

It gave examples of a very few clients with psychosis, nothing at all about saint's religious experiences and was basically a history about psychiatrists and psychologists focusing about the era of psychedelic drug usage. I thought it would be a comparison between psychosis and religious experience which it was not at all. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It was written in a very scholarly manner and addressing neuropsychology in an area that is not well understood. Was it helpful? I don't think so.
