If you are a hard-core Marvel Comics fan, and know your Super Heroes from way back when, then this marvel (excuse the pun!) of a book - which is truly a vault of treasures - will certainly enthrall you! That said: if, however, you are a fairly recent fan and only know the latest Heroes, or if you are only interested in heroes like Spidey or the Fantastic Four, then this book might not be so fantastic for you. Nevertheless, it is a great addition to any bibliophile's library, and the price is sweet too! The "Vault" holds some excellent items of memorabilia, and some of the treasures in it are signed pencil illustrations, a few collectors' cards, and a Stan Lee Book of Marvel Goofs. There's not much I can add to what's already been written in other reviews of this series, so I'll limit myself to one remark. The cover of an adventure comic book, illustrating a specific story presented within, is an essential part if that story. Its purpose is not only to make a potential buyer pick up the issue in the store and - hopefully - buy it; it is also an introductory image, a glimpse of the action-to-come and intended to set the mood before the reader even glances at the opening page of the story. The omission of the original covers has been my main objection to this otherwise impressive series and while I'm happy Dark Horse has now decided to include them here in volume 15, it's too late. Great collection of Conan stories with true-to-the-original artwork. "The Savage Sword of Conan" is by far the best among many other Conan prints available. Number 4 in this collection is in keeping with the previous 3 in this regard.

I have LOVED~! the first two editions of the Immortal Iron Fist series. 5 stars- the both of them! This edition takes a step backward. It is disjointed from the rest of the series and follows the exploits of earlier Iron Fist's and reprints the first two appearances of Iron Fist from the 1970's. Collected in this issue are: Immortal Iron Fist issues #7 & #15-16, Immortal Iron Fist: ORSON RANDALL AND THE GREEN MIST OF DEATH, and Immortal Iron Fist: ORIGIN OF DANNY RAND (MARVEL PREMIERE 15 & 16 reprinting). I recently purchased the Essential Iron Fist Vol. I which obviously collected Marvel Premiere 15 & 16 so this was redundant for me. This is an excellent book which I find very difficult to fault. It is clearly explained and well presented and the online materials accompanying the book are very useful. The way in which the subject is presented is exciting and, despite being introductory material, the book invites the reader to take their skills to a higher level by deliberate application of critical thinking. However, my only minor criticism is that sometimes the authours do not follow their own advice - sometimes they make statements which I find doubtful and arise where they failed to apply sufficient critical thinking! (Of course we are all guilty of this error sometimes). However, these statements are few and far between, as most of the time the authours examine more than one side to every controversial issue. I'm very happy with Darkhorse's reprints of the Savage Sword of Conan magazines. The quality is excellent and they are collected in the order they were originally printed. The wonderful stories and terrific artwork are still as timeless as they were back in the early 70's.

"Marvel Illustrated - The Iliad" is probably the best of the Marvel Illustrated series. It follows Homer's The Iliad, detailing the siege of Troy. From what I remember of the epic poem, this graphic novel follows the story through quite accurately. Roy Thomas also chose full inclusion of the gods in the story, as he felt they formed the logic behind certain many a character's decision. Miguel Sepulveda and Nathan Fairbairn do a great job of bringing the story to life, from glistening armor to a river running red with blood. Though the book is based around an epic battle, the images within aren't exactly visceral -- they were handled rather tastefully, and I feel that this is precisely how it should have been handled. Wow. I thought volume 1 was fun to read, but this one tops it. None of my enjoyment was ironic this time; I was sincerely impressed. The art is immaculate, the writing is spot-on, and the entertainment-to-price ratio is extremely favorable! I didn't even notice the few printing glitches that appeared often in the first volume. There's one problem: Chapter 3, "The Gods of Bal-Sagoth," feels out of place here. It reads like it was written by stoners... The action is hurried and implausible, the dialogue is sublimely stupid, and even the art looks cheap - as if this story was imported from one of those "bad" early-1970s comics that people online now make fun of.
