Books : Brunelleschi's Dome: The Story of the Great Cathedral in Florence

I travel a ton and I am so sorry I didn't climb Brunelleschi's Dome. After reading this book, I want to go back, just to climb and see all the details I just read about. At times the book got slow and technical, but it was overall fascinating.....Stands the test of time....

By tracing the careers of two French artists in the 1860s, King manages to illuminate the motivating forces behind, and the sources beneath, transition at a crucial point in the evolution of art in the West. Almost every page is filled with information and analysis that fascinates the reader. Yet King never loses focus and never blurs the narrative of the stories of two men who never met. One, Meissonier, was a popular giant of his day - an art star. Patrons could not get enough of his work because he painted what was popular. He saw what the free market wanted and he painted it. Edouard Manet, on the other hand, was Meissonier's opposite. He painted what he wanted to paint and it was, except in the small coterie of impressionists, universally reviled because it was new and shocking. King does ... Read More

3.Michelangelo and The Pope's Ceiling by: Ross King

Books : Michelangelo and The Pope's Ceiling
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Many of the stories are things I have heard before, but woven seemlessly into an insightful narrative. King's assessment of Michelangelo's ceiling and its radical importance in pictorial history is correct in its context and amplitude; my knowledge thereby enhanced. However, I found the author's unflappable and professional approach a bit disturbing; as though he personally missed out on an epiphany. I am also not a fan of the restoration, to say the least. However, I enjoyed both receiving and giving this book as a gift.

If you want a detailed analysis of Machiavelli and his work, this is not the book for you. If you want a brief, accessible introduction to the man and his life, then this will be a nice addition to your library. Personally, I tend to like detailed biographies that place the person in his or her context. But I also appreciate works such as this.

The narrative begins with Niccolo Machiavelli, age only 29 (young for the role he would play), becoming a player in Florence's political apparatus. He was a humanist, and had a good education when young. He came from a good family, albeit one that was not wealthy. Shortly after his accession to a good post, he became Second Chancellor. As a part of his position, he also was assigned diplomatic tasks.

He maintained this position until Florence ... Read More

I bought this book for self study and spent some months using it.

The structure is quite familiar to whom has already been studying languages, various lessons are divided into a text, vocabulary, grammar notes and excercises.

Talking about the general structure, I think the lessons are too long (an average of about 20 pages per lesson) so that it is difficult to study them in small time portions (takes about a week to cover a lesson). Many lessons cover too many structures and grammar points so that the exercise can't focus on all of them.

Anyway I'd like to analyze the lacking points in each section of an average lesson.

The text is always too short, uses structures that are not going to be covered in the same lesson and in my opinion is something the authors barely took ... Read More

7.Ibn Battuta In Black Africa by: Said Hamdun, Noel King

Books : Ibn Battuta In Black Africa
I was reading Dunn's commentary and historic amplification of Battuta's travels when my daughter noticed what I was reading and gave me this book (it had been an assigned text in a college history course). It happened that I was then reading Dunn's commentary on Ibn Battuta's travels in the western Arabian Sea and down the east coast of Africa (c. 1330 AD), so I set aside Dunn's book while I read this one. Aside from the obvious historical importance of Ibn Battuta's accounts (due to Ibn Juzayy), this was an excellent enlargement on Dunn's commentary. No matter the translation of Ibn Battuta's travels that you may read, Dunn's book is important to refining an understanding of IB's most impressive globetrotting, as well as to engaging the 14th century culture and politics of Africa and Asia.

King's narrative was bogged down with unnecessary details, historical conspiracies, name dropping and dead-end plot-lines in which a seventeenth century book-seller is given the task of tracking down a mysterious volume. I was pretty disappointed in the conclusion and the anticlimactic revelation of the purpose of the sought book. I had really been looking forward to reading Ex-Libris and I really wanted to like it (being such a bibliophile and having a soft-spot for books about books) but it was far too scattered and inconsistent.

This book finishes where book one left off with more advanced grammar and vocabulary. However, the included cd only covers the dialogue, leaving the example sentences with no audio examples, which is unfortunate. There are cheaper and better audio courses available. For example, the Kanada course comes with five audio cds and runs only $20. This course also covers more territory and grammar. So for about the same price as continuing Korean with postage, you could get four books and 16 cds from the Kanada course. Try that instead.
