Books : VB and VBA in a Nutshell: The Languages
I have always found O'Reilly books well written by knowledgeable authors. This book is no exception.

I've been a big fan of the 1st edition for years and found it very helpful. I use Regular Expressions a lot in Perl and found VBScript's support for RE's a bit lacking (could not extract the submatches). I was pleasantly surprised to find that this capability was added in VBScript 5.5. I bought the 2nd edition of this book because it claimed to cover VBScript 5.6. Imagine my surprise when the SubMatches collection isn't documented at all.

Overall I'm quite disappointed in the 2nd edition.

Books : ASP in a Nutshell
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.

The reference material seems accurate but I have found more detail in the free help file that comes with VBS 5.6. Return values and types and the actual values of the builtin constants, which I didn't find in the book.

I apparently overlooked the note that this book was based on VBS 5.5 when I ordered it. I have several pocket references and this is the first that fell short of my needs.

This book is a really good reference. It has made me much more efficient. It has good information of the new features of VB 2005. It has several chapters on the basics of VB as well as advanced features such as generics and attributes. I would definitely recommend buying it if you are already familiar with VB and want a good reference book for VB 2005. I try not to program without it within arms reach

Finding things in this little book is surprisingly difficult. The organization is strange and there is no index. If your patient enough, you can eventually find what you need. This book is supposed to save time, but it frustrates.

Breadth of coverage was great, but I felt it lacked enough good lengthier program examples. A case study (small application example) or 2 would have been nice. Book is terse and well-written and organized.

After thirty-five years or so in software development, including a stint with a software company as a Java web developer, I thought this would be a good volume to get me up to speed on the latest version of VB. If you already know everything that's in the book, go ahead and buy it. But if you need to learn anything from it, forget it. The author assumes you already know what you're reading about before you read it. For instance, he begins talking about Classes without explaining what a Class is. And when he does get around to defining "Class", he uses the term itself in the definition. So if you didn't already know what a Class is, you would never figure it out from his definition. Obviously, I already knew what a class is from having programmed in other Object Oriented languages. This is just one really ... Read More

I have a love hate relationship with this book. There are a lot of useful techniques spelled out in the book, unfortunately there are serious bugs in the demo code. I have been able to fix a few of them, but am still working on others. Maybe this was on purpose to get the reader to truly understand the code rather than blindly copy it.

Books : Inside the Windows 95 Registry
I needed to find a book that delved into the Win9x registry in the same amount of depth as this one, but this book is almost totally VB & C oriented. I bought it looking for a tools I could use within the command shell that's native to Win9x, but even though it didn't have what I was looking for, it's still a great book, but it's definitely a programmers guide, not an administrative tool. Since I got it, some friends have told me how a combo of Kix & Rexx scriptinig is actually what I'm looking for.

I still give it four stars because I can't knock it for not having what I want, because what it has is very, very good.
