Great book chosen/read for a book club (of all white women) I read this over a 4-day holiday and it brought me to tears a few times. It's emotional and historical, modern and joyful. I didn't feel the references to religion were so overt that someone like me (a non-practicing Catholic) was inundated to feel a certain way. I can relate to some of the books spiritual moments (from my own life) and it's interesting to see how they're written.

My personal take away is a better understanding of the homeless persona; how my volunteering in those environments may be mis/construed and received by the other parties. I think this would be a decent book for young adults preparing to volunteer as well as ALL of us and friendship. We're so superficial anymore, finding and keeping friends ... Read More

Through the authors Donald Crowhurst has left a tragic legacy for his family and a powerful gift for us the readers. Through his logs Donald documented his fallibilities and revealed his decision path. We are able to armchair quarterback, speculate how we might have done things differently and learn.

The illusion of our own grandeur is revealed through this book. We can be smug about our own approaches and look at the trials and misadventures of others with superiority. However, lurking in the corner is the bit of Donald that seeks our moment of glory. Donald identified and removed the constraints to his validation and too late he realized it was a one way ticket.

This was/is tragic for his family and their bubble was burst very early on. They had no illusions left.

Much as the first volume of Marvel Two-In-One, these are fun stories to read, but you're not going to feel the need to read them over and over again. The Thing is an entertaining character, but his team-ups are hard to imagine at times. At least there are multi-issue storylines with this volume, but there are also some one-shot stinkers, such as battles with the Hulk and Moon Knight. The best issue is #50, created by the great John Byrne, where Ben goes back in time and fights himself shortly after he became the Thing.

Although it doesn't look like the 2003 Princeton Review version of this book is different from the earlier version, it is and not just with typefaces. I bought it thinking they might have updated the resources in the back even though the Amazon blurb didn't suggest any changes. I was very surprised that the 2003 version took out the more negative, or human, stories of students who took time off to get back on track. Instead the new book highlights students who ended up at fancy colleges and makes it look like taking a year off is your key to an Ivy League school. Buy the earlier version which is much more balanced.

I have used this book, primarily when I am in a hurry to find a scale to blow over some changes, and have found that the suggestions are accurate, usable, and some are interesting. I think that this book is very comprehensive and will take your playing to the next level if you spend some time with it.
