Appendix A "teaches" you how to get the JDK (java development kit) configured. It is a night mare for someone like me, a beginner. Here are the problems: 1) It wasn't mentioned in the "Running Programs in MS-DOS" that you are supposed to restart your computer after configuring the environment variables, the only place it was mentioned was for Experienced users, and I'm not one of them! Do you know how long it took me to figure that out! I had to reread Appendix A three times! And guess! 2) No where in Appendix A was it mentioned for the "inexperienced user" that you need to include a period for the class path. I believe most people will learn a lot from this book. It is informative, provides good examples, and it actually teaches you the basics of Java programming with both Java Applications and Java Applets. The book puts an emphasize on Graphics programming, including the AWT classes, and Swing (new in Java 2). The book is extensive and will test your patience, specially if you are new to programming, but it will most definitely pay off in the end. I read the book cover to cover, and since this is the professional edition it also has an extra bonus week which covers important concepts like Signing applets, data structures, JavaBeans and how to connect to databases throught JDBC. This book is great for experienced and curious users. It's quite technical for lay users and the way information is presented isn't terribly user-oriented. But the biggest problem is that Six Apart has updated Movable Type in ways that make this book obsolete in some aspects and that make it necessary to translate concepts in others. At this point, it's probably not worth the trouble to buy the book, and also probably not worth the trouble to write this kind of book when updates are so extensive and frequent.

After buying and struggling thru "mastering frontpage 2003" tutorial cd-rom that I bought on ebay, this book was a much better teaching tool. The mastering frontpage cd-rom's tutorials lead to nothing but dead-ends by following their directions step by step. And there would be no "why?" to go with each step, so I wasn't learning much except how to be frustrated! So I picked up this book and each chapter built on the last one. Most of the technical jargon was explained pretty well. As of today, I'm on chapter 20 (of 24). Lots of info to absorb, so I might work my way thru the book a second time, or might go to some of the books' suggested on-line references listed in the Appendice to continue my frontpage education. This is a great book to learn how to create your own website. It teaches you all the basic skills in 24 chapters of 1 hour each. However, if you have any basic knowledge of MS office programs, you can do each chapter in about 30-45 minutes. Also, because of the rational order of the chapters, you do not have to wait for the last chapter before you can start creating your own web pages. The Dutch version that I was using came with FrontPage Express on the accompanying CD-Rom and even though my website is by this time already 8 megs, it is still the program I am using instead of the very expensive full version of FrontPage. So this book was awfully good value for money. And making a website is real fun, so try it!

I like the way Ms. Lemay wrote the book, She makes it easy for a beginner like me in VBscript easier to understand the language. It is like one of her Teach Yourself books! I highly recommend this as a good reference!
