Here, at last, is a hefty trade edition containing the bulk of Robert E. Howard's horror stories. Best known as an author of heroic fantasy, Howard was also a most able practitioner in the horror genre. The stories assembled here have heretofore been scattered about in a number of mass market paperbacks over the last forty years--two or three stories here, a half dozen or so there. It is indeed a blessing to get them all between two covers in a quality edition. Here is a volume that belongs in the core collection of every serious horror enthusiast.

Howard's horror stories fall roughly into several categories based on theme and setting. There are those with a regional southwestern setting ("The Horror from the Mound," "Old Garfield's Heart") as well as others set in the haunted ... Read More

Foget your highbrow accounts of mid-life crises in the Hamptons. Forget your stories of love lost and won against the backdrop of (insert contrived historical setting here). This is what entertaining, escapist fiction is about. A guilty pleasure, something to be covertly enjoyed? No, by Crom! These stories are uncompromisingly true to themselves, and as a result have more integrity than most things I've read in the last 20 years. If only those writing in Fantasy these days could shrug off the weight of tired tropes and imposed expectations of the genre, they could produce something that approaches the fresh, snappy pace and well-described action that Howard pioneered. True, he had the advantage of helping invent the genre, and didn't have to write under this weight, but that's the fun part - like ... Read More

There's not much I can add to what's already been written in other reviews of this series, so I'll limit myself to one remark. The cover of an adventure comic book, illustrating a specific story presented within, is an essential part if that story. Its purpose is not only to make a potential buyer pick up the issue in the store and - hopefully - buy it; it is also an introductory image, a glimpse of the action-to-come and intended to set the mood before the reader even glances at the opening page of the story. The omission of the original covers has been my main objection to this otherwise impressive series and while I'm happy Dark Horse has now decided to include them here in volume 15, it's too late. In my personal opinion, we are now past the grandest stories of the run, most notably the "Queen of the Black Coast" ... Read More

This second volume contains three of the best tales in the entire Conan saga: "The People of the Black Circle", "Hour of the Dragon" and "A Witch Shall be Born". "People" is Howard's Hyborian vision of the Talbot Mundy tales of the Khyber Pass. It is some of the best writing Howard ever did in a spell-binding story. "Dragon" is a kind of best of Conan tale which uses elements from other Conan stories, which makes sense when you realize this story was intended as a novel to be published in Britain. Since it was assumed that most people who would read it never encountered Conan in Weird Tales, he incoporated the best elements from other stories into a novel length adventure. Ultimately, this fell through and the story found a home as a serial in WT. "Witch" probably has the most famous scene in any Conan story: crucified and ... Read More

I will just make this short and to the point. 'speechless'.
He was a master at storytelling. I would recommend this to any one who enjoys the sword/sorcery genre. I have this in hardbound, but cannot find vol 1 and 2 in hardbound.

Dressed in black with the tall slouch-hat typical of Puritan fashion, and armed with sword, flint-locks, and, later, an ancient carved staff, Solomon Kane stalks the 16th century world from the remote reaches of Europe to the bloody decks of the high seas, and into the deepest, darkest African jungles. Whether it be a witch-cursed monstrosity, hell-spawned vampire, mutant throw-back, or just a wicked wretch of humankind, Solomon Kane will fight with equal determination and enthusiasm to see good triumph.

Robert E. Howard's tales are so alive, you almost have to check yourself for wounds. Between the lines broods an ancient feeling of melancholy that lends such realism to the writing. And the beautiful, sweeping illustrations in this book by the award-winning artist Gary Gianni bring that classical story-telling feel to the ... Read More

Kull, the Atlantean exile that became King of Valusia, is far more than simply a precursor of Conan, though some of the parallels are striking. The physical descriptions of the two are similar, though Kull's grey eyes were replaced by Conan's blue eyes. But the Kull stories stand very well on their own. This volume, including all of the published Kull stories as well as several unpublished ones (including drafts and fragments), belongs in every Howard admirer's library. H.P. Lovecraft was a friend (via mail correspondence, not in person) of Howard's, and expressed great admiration for the Kull stories in a letter to Howard - though by the time he did, Howard's Kull muse had deserted him. He was on to Conan at that time.

The illustrations by Gary Gianni are excellent, and add considerably to the overall enjoyment level of this book. One ... Read More

Books : Chronicles of Conan: Riders of the River-Dragons and Other Stories v. 9 (Chronicles of Conan)
The one substantive complaint about these reprints of the "Conan the Barbarian" comic books that Dark Horse has been reprinting has been that the original covers drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics have been omitted. That omission is mitigated somewhat by Volume 4 of "The Chronicles of Conan," which has the splash page from "Red Nails" as the cover. I have a strong affection for this particular piece of Windsor-Smith art because my college debate partner took the original black & white drawing from "Savage Tales" and blew it up on a 6-foot board that I have colored in and which has dominated my "office" for about half my life, to the dismay of my family and amusement of my friends.

This collection has issues #23-26 of Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" and the acclaimed "Red Nails" (For those concerned with continuity #22 is ... Read More

This book is exactly what it appears to be: a truly beautiful book containing Conan tales together with evocative artwork, in both colour and ink. It is weighty and impressive and constantly draws me back to it. At the price, it is a steal.

It is not, and does not purport to be, a complete collection of all Conan tales, or even of those commonly judged to be REH's finest work. I can only hope an additional volume or two follows to complete the collection in this form.

"And their memory was a bitter tree" has only two flaws: the first, which is obvious from all other reviews, is the introduction. That jars with the book itself in places: why buy a book when you are told the author of these tales "simply wasn't a great writer". Despite that, there is nonetheless some interesting information in the introduction.

The second ... Read More
