In more ways than one Larkin Conner Barkley lived life in the fast lane and that nearly proved to be her undoing. A car accident sent her into hiding with ex-cop Joe Pike as her protector.

Why would a non-fatal accident force her wealthy father, in conjunction with the FBI, to send her on the run? Why was the FBI involved?

Joe Pike owed a favor and taking on the task of protecting Larkin was his form of repayment. It was not a job he enjoyed and his only concern was keeping her alive until such time as she could safely return home.

False trails and lies will keep Joe on the run and the reader will travel righ along with him and Larkin in this multi-layered take of suspense. You will wonder who they can trust? Who is after them?

I love the thriller genre and this is a good read. Not as good as the Watchman also by Crais but good. You can depend on this writer to give you a good read. New thriller writer Conrad Jones, the Soft Target trilogy is the best I`ve read for ages, and Michael Connelly`s Overlook was a belter too.

There are fewer and fewer really good thriller writers around, many thrillers are published, but dont live up to expectations!! this is a good one I must say. Crais books are always a decent read. If your into action thrillers look at the `Soft Target` trilogy by Conrad Jones, brilliant new author. Lee Childs latest was a let down but Connelly`s overlook was a good thriller too.

I first picked up a stand alone novel by Robert Crais, Hostage, and enjoyed it very much. I then found out he has a running series, the Elvis Cole novels, and bought the Monkey's Raincoat and the rest is history! I love his novels and have since started buying and reading the novels in sequence. Great writer and I am looking forward to the rest of his novels. Robert Crais reminds me a lot of John Sandford and Harlan Coben, with the wit, humor and action of Lucas Davenport and Myron Bolitar. And now I have Elvis Cole! Outstanding writer and I look forward to each novel that he writes. Highly recommend this author!

This was my first Robert Crais book and I can understand why he has such a following.

This book grabs you from the start. The protagonist, Elvis, is slowly revealed through wonderful flashbacks as he tries to discover the identity of a murder victim who claimed, with his dying breath, that Elvis was his son. Since Elvis never knew his father, this is possible and the situation builds reader curiosity.

The dialogue throughout is great. It is real and tangible. Crais knows how to set up a scene. Reading the book is like watching a movie in your mind!

Each chapter brings the reader a bit closer to the identity of the murder victim. Even as the murder man's identity is revealed, the plot moves to finding the murderer and the motive. A fascinating ride of a book. ... Read More

Robert Crais' LULLABY TOWN features Mel Foster's smooth and winning voice, spiced by a long acting career, as it tells of Hollywood genius Peter Nelson, an erratic director used to getting everything he wants - even if he makes enemies to do so. His assignment to Cole - to locate a missing wife and child - should be easy but turns into a nightmare in this fast-paced, breathtaking thriller.

Nobody hits a homerun all the time. This author and his characters are usually so excellent they can certainly be forgiven a slip like this one. Several times I thought the lead character's ego got in the way of evidence and common sense and when one especially senseless death occurred I thought--remember Elvis they asked you to back off! Skip this one and continue on with this first rate series.

STALKING THE ANGEL is the second novel in Robert Crais' "Elvis Cole" series, about a private detective in Los Angeles. I though it was a pretty enjoyable read, although a bit too derviative of Robert Parker's Spenser novels.

Elvis Cole is like Spenser in a variety of ways: he's a non-stop comedian, he's a war vet with a code of honor, he has an ultra-tough sidekick (named "Pike" instead of "Hawk"), he has a love-hate relationship with the cops, and his clients are typically rich, privileged, oversexed, and insufferably arrogant.

The plot of STALKING THE ANGEL, which involves a missing Japanese manuscript, reminds me of the first Spenser novel, which also involves a missing manuscript. Elvis Cole also tries to "save" a young girl from her dysfunctional family, which reminds me of Spenser novels like EARLY ... Read More
