"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein was written at the peak of his writing abilities. This novel was, I believe, his best selling book. I rate this among my ten best reads. Heinlein actually affected the pop culture of the sixties with this novel. This is one case where even the critics of the time in the Sunday Afternoon Newspaper, mostly, raved over a science-fiction novel.

There are stretches of text where Heinlein seems to go on and on, but they are pertinent and worthwhile (as is the 'act within an act' in Shakespear's Hamlet).

While this is an adult novel with adult themes, it is relatively mild along those lines by the standards of 2008. However, Heinlein always had an ability to upset prudes, fundamentalist Christians, and other easily ... Read More

2.Starship Troopers by: Robert A. Heinlein

Books : Starship Troopers
This book is very political laying out the case for personal responsibility and the individuals responsibility to their community. Heinlein posits that citizens (who have the right to vote) are only made by sacrificing something for the common good (their service). From the perspective of a shock trooper (the protagonist) this has a very Spartan like sense to it.

Taken with Ayn Rands "Atlas Shrugged" or "The Fountainhead" you can get a pretty good sense of the philosophy of objectivism from fiction. Is that philosophy fascist? I don't think so. Is it liberal, definitely not.

3.The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by: Robert A. Heinlein

Books : The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein rates as one of the ten best adult SF novels of all time. To put it mildly, this book was revolutionary at the time it was written. If you are a science-fiction fan, this novel is mandatory reading. If you are not a science-fiction fan, this novel should be mandatory reading.

Fair warning: this novel really is adult reading and the easily offended and various prudes have never liked it (that includes the leadership of many totalitarian nations). While it has been described as 'libertarian', it isn't, especially the military aspects. You may (?) be shocked by some of the content. If you are smart and intelligent, I guarantee that some of the content will keep you thinking for days (or weeks) after reading the book.

By the way, ... Read More

"Time Enough for Love" by Robert Heinlein contains a series of science fiction stories about (surprise!) love. I enjoyed every bit of it. However, this book is not for everyone. I had read a large number of Heinlein books before I got to this one. Heinlein is an author who 'grows on' readers who like to think. He, also, is an entertaining author. This book has a great deal of serious 'hard' science fiction in it. I recommend that you read it.

However, some folks get bored or offended when Heinlein digs deep at the question of "What is important?". Also, each of Heinlein's works contains something that someone finds objectionable. I take such writing as a challenge to try to understand what Heinlein is getting at. There are plenty of reviews here that will tell you some of what Heinlein wrote in these stories. ... Read More

5.Tunnel in the Sky by: Robert A. Heinlein

Books : Tunnel in the Sky
"Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert Heinlein is an excellent and very entertaining science fiction novel for "juveniles" and young adults. Patrick Shepard "hyperpat' gives a very good, competent, review. There is no need to repeat his work. So, what else can I say?

Robert Heinlein fans tend to be folks who like to think. Heinlein may argue for this or that, but he was a very private person and his "public" writings do not always agree with each other, partly because he hid his actual views in any given story. Readers need to read a dozen or more of Heinlein's books before forming judgements about Heinlein's actual views.

Among other hard science fiction, this book uses a 'tunnel' as a way of moving from one place to another, often very remote place. That may be unique to this novel. Except for the "Stargate" TV series, ... Read More

From a personal standpoint I rate it a 5. I recall it fondly from childhood and have enjoyed rereading it multiple times since.

As fiction, a 3. Good story, clean writing, some nice phrases and ideas.

Mostly, it is a period piece now. A view to the gee-whiz feeling of the 50s that honest American engineering -- specifically not science -- could solve any problem.

8.Citizen of the Galaxy by: Robert A Heinlein
1969-02
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Citizen of the Galaxy
"Citizen of the Galaxy" is a good to very good read, but the plot twists are sharp. As the book starts, Thorby is a slave. Heinlein does a very good job of giving us a world that appears to be Arabic. Baslim the Beggar is a particularly interesting character. However, when the time comes to move on in Thorby's story, the author uses a couple of very sharp changes in the plot. If the reader is a total stranger to Heinlein's writing, this is disturbing.

In turn, the Free Trader part of the story is another fascinating depiction of a different culture, with some interesting characters. Next comes the Hegemonic Guard portion of the story, which always seems, to me, to need more padding. However, the author wants to move along quickly.

Finally, Thorby reaches Earth and finds an interesting way of becoming an adult as Thor, the name ... Read More

I bought this book while preparing for a business trip. I had been looking at it for a few months and hadn't had the free time to get into something. Once I opened it at the airport, time disappeared. Don't be afraid of this book: the title is what I would consider typical Heinlein -- not a lot to do with the story itself.

You have murder, mystery, politics, intrigue... throw in some advanced technology, sprinkle with space and time travel... and you've got something rather interesting. I was sorry to see it end.

If you are the kind of reader who needs everything wrapped up at the end of a story, avoid this book. Otherwise, grab a seat and open your mind.

"Glory Road" is a very good fantasy story. I enjoyed it as a 17-year old kid and still enjoy it when I pick it up over forty five years later. The nice thing about fantasy is that it does not get as out-dated as science fiction can get. I will say that this book is probably too sophisticated for anyone younger than, about, 16 to 17 years old. Also, I doubt if a reader who is new to Heinlein would appreciate this book. If you are new to Heinlein, "Space Cadet" is a much better place to start. " 'Waldo' & 'Magic, Inc.'" is another very good Heinlein book of two fantasy novellas.
