We are accustomed to talking about "summer reads," those light but compelling novels we have in hand on planes or at the beach, gulping down a few chapters on vacation or sunning at the park. In winter we like to turn to serious books, thick tomes to lose ourselves in, ideally sitting before a warm fire, snuggled in a favorite chair. But the holidays are times of rest and travel as much as the summer is, and snowy and cold days call for fun and well-written books as much as hot and humid days do. Enter Rita Mae (and Sneaky Pie) Brown and SANTA CLAWED, a solid mystery with familiar characters and a brisk pace, just perfect for wintertime reading.

The small, tight-knit town of Crozet, Virginia, is gearing up for Christmas. Mary Haristeen, known to all as Harry, is busy preparing ... Read More

I keep reading the so called "editorial reviews" and wondering if they actually read anything but modern literature? It took Proust twenty odd pages of wafting through the smell of madelines and delineating every piece of furniture in his house (and mind) to begin to introduce a character or plot. THAT was a bit slow for me. But, I *love* what I learn each book about the details of Sister Jane Arnold's life. It is a delightful quirk that she knows so many esoteric things about the saints. Just as children await every detail of what it might be like to go to school at Hogwart's, I await these books to add to my expanding knowledge of Sister Jane and her world. I AM a horse person; but never did hunt. (I am past the time in my life to even be a hill-topper, but I can enjoy "hunting" along with ... Read More

Mrs. Brown writes a good mystery. My problem with this series and the Mrs. Murphy stories is that she wants everyone who reads them to know her political views. If I had wanted to read a book on politics I would have. I wanted to read a mystery with foxhunting as an aside. As with the Mrs Murphy series the books have become a way for Mrs. Brown to broadcast her opinions on every she considers wrong with the world. None of them improve the story in the slightest. I've got my own views on things and I don't need to be preached to in the middle of a "cozy" mystery. If the next book is more of the same I will move on to another series with a more considerate author.

This is the most frustrating read I have ever experienced. All the characters are defined at the front of the book for a reason: one has to constantly go back to see who is who. The pets have names, too!!! Many times the dialogue is from the standpoint of the cats. I'm sorry I ever bought this book. It will be donated to a library for people who have far more time on their hands than myself. I stopped reading 1/3rd into the book. I will not purchase other books by the author for they will likely be as frustrating to read.

This book is wonderful and I'm a different person for reading it. You'll miss Molly Bolt once you've finished it. Can't say enough about this book, but I also can't articulate how much it affected me. Give it a shot, you won't regret it.

My mom found (literally "found") this book in her travels. She couldn't get past the first ten pages and passed it along to me. Her explanation was that she doesn't enjoy books with loads of characters. Now I've read sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, romance, heck even a little horror. I'm new to the RMB Cat series, and I'm just about half way through the book, but still can find little to recommend it. There are storycrafting techniques barely worthy of a first novel...certainly not a fortieth! For instance:

There are more characters in this story than are really necessary. Whenever an author puts a list of characters in the front (or back) of the book, that always sends up a red flag for me. If the reader can't keep track of the characters, the author has done a poor job bringing them to life. ... Read More

Remember Seinfeld, a show about nothing. The Sand Castle is a book about nothing. A complete bore, with a brief lame epilogue explaining what happened to Nickel and Leroy in the coming years. Also, why did Leroy call his grandmother Aunt Louise (Wheezie)? Didn't make sense. The best thing about this book...it was short.

I always enjoy Rita Mae Browns books. Her maine characters are people I would like to have as friends. I also love animals and like reading about them.

This was not my first Mrs. Murphy mystery. In fact I believe I read "Whiskers of Evil" first. "Wish you were here" was the second Mrs. Murphy book that I read. I enjoyed it from start to finish. It is delightful to have a Cozy mystery to cuddle up with. The characters are all well rounded, the animals delightful, and the books are page turners. I do read other cat mysteries (Midnight Louie, The Cat who ..series). But this is the first that I stuck with from book one to the last book. I could explain more about the characters and Rita Mae Brown's talented writing, but I will let others form their own opinions. Mine would be...If you skip this series...you are missing great mysteries. Barbara

I've read every book in the series so far & have enjoyed them all. As a rider and former horse groom,I know all about horses, riders, & barn politics & Rita Mae's details are dead on. How frustrating it is to read a book & it's obvious the author didn't do their homework. That's not a problem with Rita Mae. Besides being an author she is also Master of Foxhounds for her own club.

This is a 'niche' series. Readers that are not interested in horses or foxhunting could find the books tedious. At times the mystery takes a backseat to the characters (animal & human) & the sport. For folks into horses/hunting riding with Sister, Shaker, & the rest of the gang is the perfect way to spend an afternoon without even getting your boots muddy!
