Native Son / 0-06-080977-9

This book should be read alongside Ellison's superb Invisible Man. Native Son employs much the same idea - namely, that it is difficult to NOT become what others want to force you to become.

Bigger, the focus of this novel, is a good man. He's not the best, or the smartest, or the oldest, or the wisest, but he has a good heart. He wants to become a better person - he wants to BE 'bigger' in a real sense of personal growth. Not that he would think of it in these terms - Bigger is a simple man at heart.

When Bigger finds himself innocently trapped in a compromising position - a position that will be misunderstood, a position that will cause him to bear the worst of false accusations, a position that could cost his freedom and even ... Read More

This book is helpful, only problem for me personally is that I program in C# while this book uses C++. This means that for instance this book uses Matrix functions which are available in the C++ library but which aren't available in C#. But other than that this book is really nice to have because you can learn a lot about OpenGL from this book, which is the purpose of this book. In three words: A Good Buy

If white people today have any doubts of the harsh treatment of blacks in the 1900's, read this book. As a matter of fact, read the first 20 pages.
I teach this book to my 10th grade English class and my kids love this book! It is an easy read because the stories are so gripping, and the dialogue is written in the southern vernacular of the time. The main reason why high school students need this book now is because not only are the black students loosing sight of the past and appreciation for the efforts of black people, but the white students are unaware of the greatest crime in American History after slavery, Jim Crow Ethics. The Hispanic students, Asian students, African students, Indian students and countless other students from different parts of the world also need to read literature ... Read More

I decided to self study AP environmental science, which I eventually received a 5 for. This was a textbook I was considering to use, but I found it to be difficult to read (not to mention a bit politically-oriented). I would recommend Raven and Berg for APES, which is more concise and comprehensive for the test.

I ordered this book in large part because the library copy, also a paperback, had diagrams dipicting sailing ships and the names of each sail, rope, mast, etc. I presumed the original book had these diagrams and each copy as well. It is still a great story but it uses a lot of nautical terminology and without the diagram, I cannot fathom what is a stud sail, what is a ship, what is a brig.

I use this text in my Graduate Drawing class. There is a broad range of contemporary drawing included in the book, which gives the reader a snapshot of the variety of drawing being produced at the moment. The text in each chapter is brief, but complements the work, and contextualizes the drawings. I especially enjoy the fact that there are artists in the book whose work I like, and several whose work I don't really care for.

This is a very extensive book on TCP/IP protocol implementation on BSD/Linux systems. For any one who is interested in involving in networking protocol software development, this book is a must read and also a reference. It deals with kernel implementation of protocols and user based socket APIs/ioctls in detail. I strongly recommend this book for any beginner or experience professional a like.

This is one of the great political books of all time.

The authors of THE GOD THAT FAILED consist of three former Communist Party members, and three "fellow travellers." All were attracted to the Soviet Union in the 1920s and '30s. All eventually realized it was a horror, and left it. In this book, they try to explain how they were able to love a dictatorship, what they had to do, mentally, to preserve their vision of a shining future, and how, in the end, they couldn't avoid facing a dismal reality.

These are moving and human stories that illustrate the decency and meanness that exist side by side in the human soul. Read and learn.

Langston Hughes provides an introduction into this selected anthology of short stories by prominent African American writers like Langston Hughes' himself with his classic short story, "Thank You, Mam." We also have a short story by poet Gwendolyn Brooks and dancer/choreographer Katherine Dunham. There are the traditional authors like Zora Neale Huston, James Baldwin, Charles Chesnutt, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ralph Ellison, Ernest J. Gaines, Jean Toomer, and Richard Wright only to name a few. It's still a great anthology of assorted stories about African American life in America from the South to Chicago and New York.
