I have always been impressed with Richard Price's novels and his ability to wow both literary critics and fans of crime fiction. _Lush Life_ starts out as strong as anything I have ever read by Price. As in the past, Price demonstrates himself as a master of dialogue and detail that have made him such a respected author in a often neglected genre. He had me hooked up until the middle of the book, all of which I read in one sitting way past when I should have gone to sleep. However, once a certain conflict is resolved (anyone who reads the book will know what I am talking about), the story seems to lose speed rapidly and devolve into a mere recitation of events rather than a well told tale.

Even though the plot seems to slow down midway through, Price is still able to use the characters ... Read More

In a 2008 interview, Richard Price spoke of his evolution as a writer, noting that he'd learned to say more with less. That is, instead of driving home a point four times in four different ways, he'd find the single most effective way to do so, and leave it at that.

Reading CLOCKERS after Price's 2007 novel Lush Life, I can see exactly what he means. CLOCKERS is so convincing in its depiction of urban New Jersey in the 1990s, one imagines that among other things, Price went on dozens of police ride-alongs for research.

That said, after a few hundred pages and umpteen instances where Strike (one of our two protagonists) clutches his stomach, I felt the urge to shake Price's editor and say, "We get it: He has an ulcer!" This isn't to diminish the novel's power; among other things, ... Read More

3.Requiem for a Dream: A Novel by: Hubert Selby

Books : Requiem for a Dream: A Novel
I found the book infinitely more disturbing than the movie because it's so much more pleasing at the same time. Addiction is made so seductive. The characters, in their speech and mannerisms and thoughts, are so human, alive, that you want to get close to them and follow them--straight past the Gates of Hell. I remember finding the movie very disturbing on a visual level, but with the book the images didn't bother me until the final third (Which brings up Selby's simple but powerful use of classic structure: The first third introducing us to these interesting and oh so human characters, who we watch try to achieve something and then it's a fiery descent down the home stretch--the book seems to work it's way from the internal to the external in some odd way, so that we follow dreams until their consequences, nightmares, ... I have always noticed the difference between books and the movies based on them but wow the changes made from this book into the movie were huge. That being said I really enjoyed the movie and was thrilled to find that it was based on a book. I bought the book on a Saturday and finished it on Sunday. What a great story and much more enjoyable than the movie with its smaller cast. I would say if you are going to read the book then watch the movie don't, watch the movie then read the book, it will be a much better choice

A series of essays on the concept of Time in current Theoretical Physics. The papers were presented in 2000 following a tradition within the community of Physics. These topics honor Kip Thorne on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Thorne has investigated the possibility of actual time travel in current concept of Spacetime.

Igor Novikov provides arguments for the possibility of travel to the past, but concludes that it is impossible to change the past, which has already happened, including any effects of a future person traveling back into time. Stephen Hawking argues that travel in time, in the science fiction concept, is impossible, likely violating the laws of physics as we understand them now.

Contributors discuss the latest knowledge on black holes and singularities. This volume was enjoyable as a view of ... Read More

I've never read anything by Richard Price before and I was enthralled by this book. I'm usually a pretty slow reader, but I knocked back about 200 pages a day. I could not put this book down. I cancelled (or reluctantly attended) social engagements because of this book. One afternoon my hand went numb twice because I simply neglected to move it while its counterpart was furiously turning pages. The social commentary is astute, and Dempsy was a world I hated to leave. And yes, the other reviewers are right, the dialogue is razor-sharp precise. I felt like I was reading transcriptions of real conversations.

From looking at the other reviews, this is not a favorite among Price fans. So I'm glad I started here. I've already purchased Lush Life, Clockers, and Samaritan, and hope to read them soon. If you're like me, and you've never read anything by ... Read More

Richard Price may not be a household name, but you probably know him for his screenplays: Clockers, The Color of Money, Sea of Love, Mad Dog and Glory, and the recent redo of Shaft. The Bronx-born author has also written numerous novels, most of them about working-class life in hard-bitten urban locales: housing projects, subway stations, inner-city high schools.
His latest novel, "Samaritan," is about a man who has skyrocketed out of the projects to success, but can't seem keep himself from going back. Ray Mitchell, now a wealthy screenwriter, has returned from Los Angeles to New Jersey, in part to be nearer to his adolescent daughter, Judy, in part to escape his cocaine habit. But he's also come back to excavate something from his own background in the dismal, crime-infested Hopewell housing projects. And upon his return, how is he welcomed? He wakes ... Read More
