This was my first exposure to the Parachute series (never needed it before now). The "Hard Times edition" is right! This book shed light on other ways to keep and advance my career that I had never thought of! A member of the Internet Generation, I have been relying only on networking sites like LinkedIn and RiseSmart resume editing services and job searches. These have gotten great leads, especially because they're personalized, but Parachute will be a worthwhile supplement. All young professionals, whether targeting six-figure incomes like me or not, would do well to buy this book and study it!

In some parts a too religious perspective, but contains some ok exercises to help you identify your skills and wants, and gives your more insight into the complete picture of your ideal job. Book is mostly about job finding/applying/negotiating tips. Nice illustrations.

I read this book back in the 80's and found it very helpful. When my aged college daughter was questioning her major, I shipped her this book. I think it should be a "must read" for all high school students.

This book is awesome... I have to put it down every few pages because I like to put thought and intention into the exercises.... it is hopeful, knowledgeable and encouraging...

I ordered about 40 over the past year for an associate director of my company. He uses a Chapter in his monthly global meetings. They read it and discuss how they can implement it. I read it & ordered more for various other managers. The book is excellent, easy to understand, and easy to put in practice. I believe every manager and employee should read it and practice what is on the pages.

I love the way the author has adopted a holistic approach ties and ties all of the elements together at the end. The Financial Pillars chapter is a real eye opener.

If you are a creative person, and are stifling your creativity for your desk job, please read this. There are lots of good ideas in this book, it's inspiring and I will be trying some of the suggestions in it.

Overall I found this book to be very useful. The short, concise chapters made the information easy to digest. I work with undecided college students, so not everything was relevant, but the majority of the book served as a great refresher. Every career counselor will make it his or her own, but there are many useful suggestions and ideas that can be adapted to different situations.

I'm at a complete loss to explain the appeal of this book. I found exactly one useful insight, and it's contained in one clumsy sentence on page 37: "Most employeers hunt for employees in the exact opposite way from how job-hunters hunt for them." What he means is that in terms of landing for a job, sending out resumes on the Internet is the least effective method, applying directly to targeted companies is better, and networking and temping are better still. Bolles even has the supposed success rates for each method. Nice to know. The rest of the book, however, is a huge waste of paper. The vast majority of the content is devoted to discussing the obvious in embarrassingly deep detail, i.e. posing questions like "what skills do you most enjoy using?" or "where do you want to live?" and asking the reader to do childish exercises ...
