The first thing I will say about The Selfish Gene (TSG) is that it is not the first book on evolution you should read although as a Dawkins book it is not a bad choice but for those unfamiliar with both, then I would suggest Climbing Mount Improbable or The Blind Watchmaker first. Both of those books by Dawkins have a much broader, more generalized, look at natural selection and evolution.

TSG is an entirely different type of book because it is particularly academic and a very complex read on specific lines of reasoning that are even aimed at correcting the misconceptions of big name professional biologists. It assumes that the reader will be somewhat acquainted with Darwinism and evolution. If you are not then I would strongly urge that you pass on TSG until you do. In fact, you ... Read More

Specifically, is it wrong that I'm using this book for the third time as bedtime reading material and am actually staying up later than I should? This enormous, densely written tome would seem at first to be a monumental bore, but I find it a compelling read time and time again!
The metaphor of the whole of modern life, meeting up and converging on that time when all life was one, gives a slight understanding to how complex evolution has been, and how much time it has taken. The fact that virtually identical genes can be found in creatures as different as whales and fruit flies shows just how related every living thing is. The idea that DNA is more of a recipe than a blueprint, makes the fact than any of us are here just that much more weird and wonderful. Dawkins' thoughts on human culture ... Read More

I haven't read it yet. However, She giggled almost continually. Let me tell you, she is one of the most serious twenty somethings I have ever known! She did tell me two of her proff's had to research to even attempt to refute a couple of statements she made in class and that most of her comments created passionate dialogue.

This book anticipates the storm that followed Richard Dawkins' best seller, "The God Delusion", which told us bluntly that there is no cosmic security, that there is some kind of a future in our DNA, that we are doomed to oblivion, so why not have good time while we're at it."

Apparently his idea of a good time is hope in Darwinism(his version, of course), a dose of random selection, a round or two of bottled atheism, and "let's all sing in the dark, because we are all doomed anyway.

He actually thinks that his Gospel of the Absence of God is something that will cheer people up. Who is he talking to, anyway? What kind of logic is behind the simple statement that "God does not exist because I say so"?

We have to begin by dissolving the imaginary iceberg that he has placed between ... Read More

Books : Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World
If you want to take an exotic trip to South America to visit the Galapagos Islands, but can't actually afford the air fare and hotel accommodations, you'll want to sit back in the comfort of your home and enjoy "Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World". The commentary was wonderful, and the colors, sites and scenes were magnificent.

This is one of the best nature documentaries I've ever seen and it left me yearning for more. If you have even the slightest love of nature and an interest in the ecology of our world, you'll want to see this outstanding DVD.

It's a tough read at times, since it is aimed at Dawkins' colleagues and biology students. But it gives you a sense that the mechanisms of inheritance and natural selection are getting to be very well understood.

Oddly, the alleged subject of the book is to be found tucked away in the last chapters, the first 10 or so being Dawkins explaining stuff and telling how others are mistaken.
