1.March by: Geraldine Brooks
2005-03
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : March
I won't go into details about the plot; amazon has already done a pretty decent job at that. What I do want to do is address some of the other reviewers' comments and also talk a little bit about why I gave this book 4 stars and not 5.

First: This book is NOT a sequel to "Little Women." Anyone who complains that "as a sequel to 'Little Women' this book sucks" is, I'm afraid, an idiot who neither owns, nor has access to, a dictionary. "March" is what you would call a revisionist text -- it takes characters and storylines from one story (in this case, Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women"), and uses them to create an entirely new universe of the author's making.

Like most people who have read it, I love "Little Women." Unfortunately, it is somewhat hampered by 19th ... Read More

Langston Hughes provides an introduction into this selected anthology of short stories by prominent African American writers like Langston Hughes' himself with his classic short story, "Thank You, Mam." We also have a short story by poet Gwendolyn Brooks and dancer/choreographer Katherine Dunham. There are the traditional authors like Zora Neale Huston, James Baldwin, Charles Chesnutt, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ralph Ellison, Ernest J. Gaines, Jean Toomer, and Richard Wright only to name a few. It's still a great anthology of assorted stories about African American life in America from the South to Chicago and New York.

The seller claimed to have sent this book overnight on Friday for a price of $77.69 for shipment, but I didn't get the book till the following Thursday. Either they have a defective mail system, or the seller did not mail it out on time as a responsible seller should.

Books : The Classical Guitar: A Complete History
This book is a goldmine for those who want to learn something about the classical guitar and for those who love the instrument.

Although it does discuss some of the great classical guitarists -- Segovia, Williams, Bream, etc. -- it is oriented more toward the great classical guitar builders and has detailed information on the great luthiers of the present and recent past.

A real plus is the selection of superb color photos of a number of gorgeous guitars; the photos make clear that a guitar can be a work of art as much as an instrument of music.

It is a book the lover of the classical guitar will return to repeatedly, just for the pleasure of looking at some unquestionably beautiful works of musical art.

9.Whiskey Island (Mira) by: Emilie Richards
2000-07
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Whiskey Island (Mira)
"Prospect Street" by Emilie Richards was the first book I read from this
author. I loved it. I couldn't wait to get my hands on more of her
fiction.
I read "Whiskey Island" and the sequel "The Parting Glass" and was very
disappointed. Didn't have the substance or interesting story line and
characters I expected. Very predictable.
I will read another of her books, since I ordered several of them, and
I'm hoping her others will equal "Prospect Street" as a great read.
