This is the first Nero Wolfe book that I've read, although I have seen the dramatatizations that have been done on television. I enjoyed these, and I enjoyed this book. Wolfe is an eccentric and he is wonderfully portrayed. In this book he and his sidekick Archie are on their way to a gourmet cook convention in West Virginia. This is something in itself because Wolfe rarely leaves his home in New York City. He solves most of his crimes from there, close to his orchids and his own wonderful cook. Wolfe is a gourmet, and food drives everything he does. The mystery is intricate, and the story here is lots of fun. I do need to read more of Rex Stout's wonderful character. What is plagiarism? How can a responsible editor be assured, in the pre-internet '50s, that he's notpublishing something stolen? That's only the beginning of this great story. In this case, the plagiarist is so adept at his craft that he can even emulate female writers flawlessly. And yes, fans of Serbo-Croat get to read or hear some Montenegrin cussing in this story. Who could ask for anything more??

BLACK ORCHIDS is an unusual Nero Wolfe volume for many reasons. To begin with, this is not a single novel but is instead two novellas written and set in 1941 and 1942 involving the aforementioned rare orchids. In the first story a rival orchid grower has managed to produce three black orchids which he has on display at the flower show. Wolfe has sent Archie to the show each day to observe and then report on details of these rare flowers. Finally, driven to desperate measures Wolfe himself goes to the show to see the plants for himself. Over My Dead Body is the seventh in the Nero Wolfe series. A young lady claiming to be Wolfe's adopted daughter from Yugoslavia asks for his help with a charge of stealing diamonds but this quickly evolves into a situation where she is suspected of murder. The case frustrates Wolfe no end, it gets more complicated all the while, but of course he manages to uncover the solution by the end of the story. This book is a prime example of a Nero Wolfe novel. Archie Goodwin is in top form as a wise cracking pain-in-the-neck. Inspector Cramer is present more than a lot of stories giving Goodwin plenty of opportunities for zingers besides the ones he routinely fires at Wolfe. Wolfe himself is definitely out of his comfort zone dealing with the situation of his adopted daughter and this also adds to the potential for laughs. ... Read More

This early (1936) entry in the long running Nero Wolfe series opens with Wolfe being manipulated into taking a case. Llewellyn Frost was had to resort to chicanery (and Archie's assistence) to get Wolfe look into the murder of a young model. While Mr. Frost knew the victim slightly his main concern was for his cousing, or ortho-cousin, as he put. Once Wolfe has taken the case the victims and clients began appear. Although Wolfe manages to resist all efforts to disturpt his routine he requires Archie, Saul, Fred and Orrie to seek out the answers hidden in THE RED BOX. This is a very early Wolfe mystery, and while it would be a good place for someone new to the series to begin, it is a real treat for already established fans. Another great triple murder book by Rex Stout. In Kill Now - Pay Later, did the shoeshine man kill to avenge his daughter? In Murder Is Corny, why was the corn delivery man killed and more importantly,where is Nero Wolf's select corn? And last but not least, in Blood Will Tell, the brownish spot on a tie mailed to Mr. Archie Goodwin does turn out to be blood. The blood of a promiscuous young married woman whose husband is now accused of killing her. Three murders and three clients now suspected of murder. Nero Wolf with the help of the confident and engaging Archie Goodwin dissects each case and as always, resolves each mystery.
