Great book for generic and basic info about PM and being a PMBOK, it is a reference book. Currently using it for the PM class at CSUF.

I feel that it is important to mention that I have had little project management experience. I purchased the CD-ROM version of this book in preparation to take the CAPM exam given by PMI. The 2000 version of the PMBOK guide is obsolete as of September 2005. The PMI exams are now based on the Third edition of this guide. I found this book to be as exciting to read as the Yellow Pages, though I will admit that if I were an experienced project manager, I would find the book much better reading. Cualquier gestor de proyectos debe tener este libro en su biblioteca. Son los principios y fundamentos del manejo de proyectos. Este libro es útil para cualquier persona que quiera aprender sobre la manera correcta de gestionar proyectos. Existen otros libros con información complementaria como cálculo de costos, valor presente actual, etc. que no se encuentran tan detalladamente en este libro; sin embargo, es muy útil para lo fundamental del manejo de proyectos.

Although very sparse, this does suffice to set the foundation for the basic knowledge areas required for prgram management. Whether it is worth the price is subject to debate because it does nothing to prepare the reader for the PgMP Exam. Since most PgMP study guides also include this basic info, I would advise that purchasing this in hopes of using it for exam prep is probably a waste of money.

This book provides the PMI standard for portfolio management. Its a very thin book and can be read within a relative short time. The book consists of 3 chapters and 4 appendixes. The first chapter is a short introduction to the idea of portfolio management, the second chapter explains the role of portfolio management in the organization. The third chapter is the actual standard. The actual standard consists of 2 processes: Aligning and monitoring and controlling. Aligning consists of a bunch os sub-processes which basically boil down to "make a list of your projects and select which ones you support". The monitoring process is even simpler. I was so disappointed in this book. It is VERY short and doesn't contain really any more information than I was able to get from the PMI website. It was way to expensive to be so limited in information. I was expecting much more information about the exam than it contained. : > (

You can download the read-only pdf version of this on the PMI website for free, so unless you've just got to have a hard copy, not sure why you'd want to actually pay for this. If you do want a hard copy, do yourself a favor and read through the pdf version first. You'll probably find that you don't want to spend the money. Speaking of money, on the PMI website, this thing goes for $38 (PMI member price). On Amazon, it's 26 bucks and you get free supersaver shipping. That begs the question, why is it cheaper for Amazon to buy it from PMI and sell it to you versus PMI selling it to you directly? As far as content goes, it's pretty much the same old poorly written junk that comes from PMI. But since they're the PMI, it's okay because they must be experts in project management. It ...
