Books : True lies
True Lies has long been on the Sid the Elf back-burner. It was on the list of films that must be reviewed at some point, and kind of became an emergency B. It was like the Vinny Testaverde of B, weren't too excited to use it because of the apparent clumsiness involved, but if first and second options failed, you might be ok going with it. Well, we officially went into emergency B mode this week so we went with True Lies. It turns out that we were exactly right, there was a ton of clumsiness to endure, but in the end Sid came out ok. Really, you're never in bad hands with Arnold. If Amazon had his California tourism commercials on DVD, we'd not only review them, we'd give them 5 stars. The point is, we could get a laugh or a hundred out of Arnold saying anything at all. True lies was no exception. ... Read More

Philip Roth emerged as one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century and a man whose talents were to stretch the boundaries of western literature and bring new life into American fiction. Capably edited by Ross Miller (Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Connecticut), "Philip Roth: Novels and Other Narratives 1986-1991" is the fifth and latest volume in the outstanding Library of America series showcasing the work of this American literary giant. These writings are taking from the author's mid-career and include 'The Counterlife', a ground-breaking novel which was published in 1986; 'The Facts: A Novelist's Autobiography' published in 1988 and represents Roth's professional memoir; 'Deception', a candid noel of adultery published in 1990; and 'Patrimony: A True ... Philip Roth is a giant of American literature, and this select volume by the Library Of America is a perfect addition to everyone who cares about great literature and likes to see where the greatness began and how it grows in the world of literature. Philip Roth's stature is right up there with Twain, Whitman, Hawthorne, Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Faulkner. He writes with clarity, and honesty about life, love, death, and has a sense of humor that is sometimes so subtle it is missed. To complain about the size of the print on the binding is as irrelevant as it is mean spirited. Great writers provide substance, how the publisher presents it is of little real consequence. This, and the second volume are a must for all bibliophiles.

The copy was sent without a jacket--as I was collecting the entire series, this was a disappointment. I returned it but was not refunded the purchase price. Will think twice before ordering again. Buying from a bookstore is better.

This was a visually impressive book on modern office fit-outs. The book did however lack evaluative criticism of the workspaces. Working in the industry myself I continuously have to deal with defective fit-outs, so an evaluation of the space with feedback from staff would have been great. Having said this though, the book shows some stunning designs and talks about the process behind the artistic decisions. A pity there are not many Asian/Pacific offices looked at.

Definitely one of the best office design books. Great for the office or coffee table.

There is not much I can add to C T Dreyer's review. Dreyer is one of the premier reviewers on this site and every serious student of Western philosophy who surfs Amazon should take the time to read the entire compendium of his reviews which is an education in itself.
There is one further point about this work, however, which is crucial, I believe, and what makes it a "historical document". Ross, in my opinion, shared by many, if not the vast majority of ethicians, in his argument for prima facie duties, absolutely defeats the utilitarian/consequentialist claim to providing a complete and therefore satisfying moral theory. Simply put, the consequentialist cannot account for the concept of duty. There are such agendae as promises and promises kept. We cannot ignore or dismiss them and still claim any sort of consistency ... Read More

Books : The Book of Druidry
Modern Druidry owes a lot to Ross Nichols. He removed the masonic ties and brought paganism back into the path. Inspiring and educating many followers of the modern Druidic Revival - we all owe a great debt of gratitude to this man. And his lessons live on through Philip Carr-Gomm. Everyone should have this book in their collection.
