I loved the trilogy! I couldn't stop reading, Pullman's story-telling talents are intoxicating! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read and to be entertained.

I couldn't get into this series. It took me forever to read the entire trilogy because I just couldn't engage myself with it. I read the three books a couple of pages at a time with large breaks in between. I finished it out of pure stubborness.

Its not that the books were bad. Because the idea behind them was quite interesting.

My problem was that I didn't like any of the characters. The only one I vaguely liked was Will and even then... after two books, I felt like I didn't know him any better than the moment he was first introduced.

That's my problem with the trilogy. There is no 'personal' moments where you feel you can really understand and identify with the characters. They are just soldiers. Shadows. They couldn't possibly be anything else because ... Read More

The second book in the His Dark Materials series still has you clamoring for more, though the ending leaves the reader more anxious and weary, than the first book. The amount of religious symbolism intertwined with plot devices is heightened and some of the choices that Pullman makes from a writer's perspective works well. There were other choices that he has made, which leaves me to wonder if the plot is taking control of him, rather than the author controlling the plot.

The beginning you meet Will, a boy from our world. His mother carries a secret about his father, who last saw Will when he was still a baby. This forces him to put his mother in hiding. Will's introduction sets the reader up for what's to come. I can tell you I raced through those pages as my interest was in Lyra's departure ... Read More

Anything by Philip Pullman is a gift, but this beautifully made little book (along with its counterpart, Lyra's Oxford) is particularly wonderful. Not only well-written to provide detailed and fascinating "back story" for characters in Pullman's masterful trilogy, His Dark Materials, but also a pleasure to hold and read--a hard covered book with pages of high-quality paper that are a delight to turn, full of period maps and pictures and printed in an appealing font. Both the story and physical nature of the book will make you feel enriched.

Books : The Golden Compass, Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (His Dark Materials, Book 1)
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman is the first book in the trilogy: His Dark Materials. The story is remarkably told in a parallel universe that is similar to ours, but of course, this being a work of fantasy fiction, Pullman included magic and other fantastical beings. The story has many main characters but the most important character is a stubborn and courageous young girl from Great Britain, Lyra. The whole story is about a golden compass, Lyra and her daemon Pan, and their magnificent journey through this parallel universe, carrying out a task that is not immediately defined but they know it will save their world and make history. The story is a delectably retold history of our world in a more fascinating and magical setting. From beginning to end, the storyline is filled with suspense and unpredictable ... Read More

When I started reading Oliver Twist, it was an assignment for school and nothing more. However, I was soon intrigued by little Oliver, a quiet, naturally pleasant little boy, and who is apparently a magnet for bad company and lives in a workhouse. I wondered how he could remain so sweet and childish through all he'd been through.

Dickens kept me turning the pages with cliffhangers and anticipation. It's witty and it has hilarious moments concerning the band of thieves. Master Charley Bates' laughter is infectious even from the pages of the book, The Artful Dodger's proposed `genteelman behavior' is amusing, and Fagin's witty remarks always manage to entice a chuckle from me and my dad as we read it together.

The only thing that irritated me was that Dickens leaned a little too far to the left and the ... Read More

Fans of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series will find Ruby in the Smoke very different, but in many ways just as pleasurable to read. It opens with sixteen-year-old Sally Lockhart visiting her deceased father's shipping firm and accidentally causing one of his associates to die of a heart-attack when she ask him if he knows of the Seven Blessings. The phrase was on a piece of paper dictated by her father before his death and sent to her in secret.

Fearing that her life is in danger, Sally seeks to unravel the mystery of why her father died, who would like to see her dead, and where to find the famed ruby of an Indian maharajah. Set in Victorian London, the Ruby in the Smoke takes the reader into the dark underworld of the times, where opium dens, disreputable boarding houses and seedy characters abound, while poverty ... First off, let me say that we're not talking here about the famous Qi gong instructor named John Milton. We're talking about the famous 17th-century English poet who wrote _Paradise Lost_ and _Paradise Regained_, two of the most wonderfully overlong Christian poems in the history of Western literature.

Your English teacher will tell you that _Paradise Lost_ "narrates the story of Adam and Eve's disobedience, explains how and why it happened, and places the story within the larger context of Satan's rebellion and Jesus' resurrection." And you know that can't be far wrong, because SparkNotes says the exact same thing.

But the main reason everyone should read Milton's grand epic is that it contains certain secrets about prayer.

In PL, Milton reminds us how important it is, when we pray, to be absolutely ... Read More

There are great things about this book. I really liked the non stero typical Jews in the book, from the Jewish Gangster with hopes of being in the Cabinet, to stary eyed Zioniests with everyone in between. However, I do not understand the actions of main character at the end, would she not have tried to help people she wants to help through world of investment that she understands. Also there is a whole inter marrage question not even delt with. Plus page after page is wasted on the kid having an accident, and whole chapter which does nothing to move the story should have been left out. What is worst disappoment is some of it seems to have been recycled from the second book.
