I had the privilege to have Phil Meggs for Type I in which we used this book. This book in conjunction with his instruction provided me with an invaluable foundation in the understanding of type and it's use as a communication tool. It's a must in any graphic designers library.

Books : Six Chapters in Design: Saul Bass, Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser, Paul Rand, Ikko Tanaka, Henryk Tomaszewski
This book is exactly what I hoped it would be: a visual parade of the works of designers who are arguably considered superstars in graphic design.

The various graphics are seen applied to print (magazine/book/poster), signage, film and sculptural media.

The examples span several decades, from the early 40s to the mid-90s. The great thing about seeing superb design in the years before the 1980s is that design during that period was accomplished without the use of computers; as a result, greater emphasis was placed on composition, shape, typography, color and imagination. The result was design that was simple, bold and highly communicative. It's a far cry from the over-stimulated design that almost everyone with a computer is capable of producing -- and has.

I got this for school, I thought it would be a good read. I was wrong. I could have passed the class without buying the book.

I dare to disagree. Maybe in today's boring photography scene a planless collection of either totally uninteresting or blurry photographs, that would be rejected in any amateur contest, are considered as rule breaking or innovative... but for luck I have seen photographs that were made before these. Every second collection of contemporary photographs that I look at, and that is marketed as art, shows about this same stuff. I'll just go out and take them myself if I want to own a picture of the three knobs on a washing machine, combined with a pseudo-deep comment. Maybe I can find the sense of life in them I will frame them and hang them on my wall.
Uhmm..I won't.

Goes well with Revival of the Fittest also edited by Meggs. This sample book is different in that the faces shown were chosen by other designers. The faces seen in this book are the ones that you will be using 95% of the time. It is always good to study the classic faces in detail to get a better sense of their character and see the posibilities in their shapes.

I loaned out my first copy and never got it back. No surprise; this books is like a box of specialty chocolates. Each essay is a savory morsel leaves the reader anticipating the next confection. It's just packed with little gems; a delicious assortment of pieces from the legendary figures of Graphic Design and Typography. Despite its rather bland (pink?!?) package, the book is a pure delight.

Books : The Mechanical Bride : Folklore of Industrial Man
I am happy that Gingko Press has brought out this handsome 50th anniversary edition of Marshall McLuhan's _The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man_, and I am looking forward to seeing _The Complete Mechanical Bride_ that Gingko Press plans to publish in the near future. I'd like to provide some background information here regarding McLuhan's first book.

It is hard to say exactly when Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) started gathering the materials and writing the short essays that were published as _The Mechanical Bride_ in 1951. However, Walter J. Ong, S.J. (1912-2003), has reported that McLuhan was working on this project when Ong studied under him at Saint Louis University in the late 1930s and early 1940s. During this same period McLuhan was also working on his Cambridge ... Read More
