I am amazed to read others say the could not get into "Shadow Country", and having read the trilogy there is no need for another treatment. However, the brilliance of the author and the immediacy of this treatment is so powerful, I want to say it may be the best book by an American writer I have ever read.
The protagonists voices seem to have spoekn directly to the author, who has offered it all up to us, his readers. I feel as though I understand some of the mysteries surrounding the early south Florida - and U.S.) history (such as how could they have knowling nearly wiped out dozens of species of wildlife) were illuminated for me. Long the book took me a month to read, especially as parts inspired rereading.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in an absorbing period ... Read More

I think that I admired "The Snow Leopard" more than I actually enjoyed it.

After the death of his wife, the author, Peter Matthiessen, joined a naturalist trek in Nepal to investigate the mating habits of blue sheep. His diary became the basis of "The Snow Leopard," which won a National Book Award. There's no question that it deserved the award. The autobiographical parts are moving; the descriptions of landscape and animals are meticulous and sometimes lyrical; even the Zen material, though tainted by New Age superstition, is thought-provoking. The reader feels transported into an alien world -- surely the mark of great travel writing.

That said, Matthiessen's painstaking attention to his physical surroundings overwhelms the human story at too many points for "The ... Read More

Books : Killing Mister Watson (Panther)
Pros: delightful narrative written in authentic dialect; interesting characters and plot promote further reading/research about Florida history.

Cons: characters' perspectives on events leading up to Mr. Watson's death become tedious and repetitious, especially during the last half of the novel. This book could have been condensed without losing any content.

This is a very in depth look at Leonard Peltier and the continuing plight of the people on the Plains. In 1975 members of AIM shot and killed 2 FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Four men were accused one man Leonard Peltier went to prison for it. Peltier is considered a political prisoner. He is still imprisoned. This is the story about the political events surrounding this case. This book walks you through the timeline and events surrounding what happened on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1975 and takes you through a very botched up trial.

"Silence, they say, is the voice of complicity.
But silence is impossible.
Silence screams.
Silence is a message,
just as doing nothing is an act." Leonard Peltier

After reading this book, I suddenly realized the root problem of Western Civilization: We have no culture. Where there was once culture, we now have an expanding economic order threatening all life on the planet. Through its mechanism of growth and expansion, the global economy is conquering and converting life's diversity into an ecological and social monoculture of cash crops, Levis, soda pop and movie theatres. Perhaps moonscape would be a better word. Of course, it doesn't have to be this way. Our fast-paced, increasingly technological, capital-intensive, fossil fuel-centered, centralized, highly specialized, travel and commercial-oriented, often stressful society is by no means the end-all-be-all of human history. Murder, child abuse, drug abuse, theft, poverty, hunger, and every other problem that plagues the West are ... Read More

Matthiessen's book deeply affected me, mostly because it is unsettling and so well "done" that I imagined myself doing and being all the beautiful and hideous things its characters do and are. The copy of the book I have has a one-line cover review that mentions something about the great compassion that comes across its pages. I agree with all the other reviews here on Amazon about what makes this book so great: evocative writing, a driving plot, compelling characters, an exotic yet beautifully and believably rendered setting, humor, horror, longing, lust, irony and juxtaposition of things as they are, and on and on. However, as I have thought often during the reading of the book I must say that I agree with the cover reviewer, and for me, what elevates this book to the highest level (which I believe it is on) is its compassion. Matthiessen ... Read More

Walden, of course, is a timeless classic. I've read it in its entirety several times, and I keep this book at my bedside so I can flip to my favorite chapters, Solitude, The Ponds, Winter Animals, Spring, etc., any time I wish. Only Thoreau can end a book with the sentence "The Sun is but a morning star". About the only thing I am not that crazy about in this book is the first chapter "Economy", it seems to me that Thoreau just spent a little too much justifying his living at Walden, why he tells a story about himself, etc.

As to this book, you have Walden and a few famous short essays (Civil Disobedience, Life without principle, etc.) in their entirety. Do not expect much from the excerpts from other works (A week, the Maine woods, Cape Cod and the journal), they merely give you very fragmented glimpses of them. However, there is an excellent ... Peter Mathieson's The Snow Leopard struck a chord with me. He skillfully wove his personal trials and tribulations into the fabric of an adventure story, looking for an endangered cat in remote parts of Nepal, and his study of Buddhism. The Tree Where Man Was Born falls far short of the standards he created. We learn lots about the anthropology, history, and natural environment of East Africa but little or nothing about the author. The book starts slowly and the reader waits in vain for a story. Once you realize its a travelogue, its pretty good with lots of interesting tidbits about critters and folks in this region of the world. It is by no means a nature classic as billed.

Sal Si Puedes, by Peter Matthiessen, is an excellent chronicle of the adult life of the farm workers' revolutionary, Cesar Chavez. This Biography written by Matthiessen is from the day he meets Chavez to the time he passed away in 1992. Chavez was a activist for the rights of all farm workers, and believed that union representation was not only a privilege, but a right of all workers. With the installment of the Bracero program, non American people brought into the united states were allowed to work in the fields, because Lobbyists in Washington were successfully able to determine that no American was willing to do the back breaking manual labor of picking and harvesting the fields in California. This book was simply put, is the best book that I have read in my young adult life.
One thing that I enjoyed in this biography is the use of language. I found ... Read More
