I purchased this book under the assumption that I would be able to walk away with an understanding of the Mayan calendar and it's "Predictions, Prophecies & Possibilities", since 2012 obviously has a close affinity to it. About eighty-percent of the authors never even allude to the Mayans, so this definitely does not ameliorate one's intellect on them. There are indeed authors of essays that do elaborate on the subject of the Mayans and go more into detail about their perspective utilizing elements from the Mayan culture. However, there are others, which is unfortunately the masses, and even if I am partial to attributes of their interpretations, that had me quite incensed. The only reason I would simultaneously retort these and advocate certain elements is a thing called constructive ... Read More

A few things occurred to me while zipping through this novel. One, Peter Jenkins obviously should not be idolized as a legendary outdoorsman. He made countless mistakes that but his life in danger, namely not starting his hike earlier and avoiding the harsh northern winter. However, he really never claimed to be one, as he reminded us numerous times of his suburban background. He also admitted to not being much of writer, which was also true. I would say the redeeming quality of his story was his willingness to explore "our" America. His life could have gone in a completely different direction, especially after his early divorce. I commend him for this, and he has added to my desire for long-distance backpacking.

The final section of the book dealing with his pursuit of his wife was nauseating ... Read More

I am still in the process of reading this book but what I have read so far is really great. I am looking to travel to Alaska in 2009 and a travel consultant I have been talking to recommended that I read this book.

The book really gives a great insight into the ordinary every day Alaskan lives which has just made me want to see Alaska even more.

I recommend this book to anyone whether you want to see Alaska or not. It is just a great read.

Books : The Walk West: A Walk Across America 2 (Walk West)
Just like in the first book, A Walk Across America, the best take-away for this book is Jenkins' vivid description of the people he meet and stays with.

The story however get rather repetitive and the more I read, the more I find Jenkins himself a rather unpleasant character. He pushes himself and, more important, others to the brink of death for the sole purpose of him to reach his personal goal. And his push is pure stupidity. Like:

- Walking across the desert in the summer and during the daytime to almost succumb to thirst - stars and the moon would have provided ample light to walk during night (he did walk on roads) and he could have rested in whatever shade available during day.

- Crossing a high altitude pass and sinking 2 feet deep into snow - in only shorts, and without ... Read More

This book becomes more relevant every year! For organizations that want responsible employees, it challenges leadership to consider the assumptions that drive traditional HR performance appraisal processes - most importantly those arising from the common `parental' or `patriarchy' model of leadership and organizational development.

In this research-based analysis of the multiple purposes of performance appraisal, a labor attorney and an experienced HR professional team-up to explain why appraisals backfire - and they clearly accomplish that key goal of the book. In particular they explain why, in a world in which 98% of people see themselves as being in the top half of performers, the requirement to force-rank employees is a demoralizing and demotivating policy - if you then connect pay raises to this policy, it is ... When Peter Jenkins finished college he made a decision that was destined to change him forever. He decided that he was not ready for things like graduate school or a steady job. Instead, he decided to walk across America with his dog, Cooper. As word of what he was doing spread around the country, Jenkins was asked to speak to small groups and eventually found himself writing the magazine articles for major publications that led to his bestsellers describing his adventure.

A Walk Across America covers his walk from New York to New Orleans where he fell in love with both the city and the woman who was to become his wife. The Walk West is about his walk with his new wife from New Orleans to Oregon, completing the long journey that he had envisioned as a fresh college graduate. Jenkins continued to travel and to write books ... Read More

Whoever gave this book one star doesn't have any sense whatsoever! This is is very informative. It isn't vague and you don't need to purchase several other books to fill in any gaps. The title of this book is exactly what you get inside the book. I'm glad I bought it and it now has a permanent spot on my shelf. My review title reads "3 great books". I also want to mention to other books that do tie into this book if you want to take it to the next level as I did. NINJA SHADOWHAND: The art of Invisibility, AND KNIGHTS OF DARKNESS both by Dr. Haha Lung. I don't think I need to explain how these books tie in together. 3 great books and well worth every penny!!
Enjoy!

This is a book any nature lover should pick up. I'd heard Matthiessen's name but sadly hadn't read any of his work until now, and what a great collection this is to start off with. Matthiessen writes about the world around us vividly, lyrically and eloquently, without getting TOO florid and new-agey as some nature writers tend to do. He travels the world in this collection spanning his career, from shark observations to Himalayan treks to African safaris to New England fishing villages, always honest and compulsively readable. His description of a pack of wild dogs hunting zebra in Africa ranks with the best passages about wildlife I've ever read, and will floor you.
