1.Book of the Eskimos by: Peter Freuchen

Books : Book of the Eskimos
I have read proabably every book ever written about artic people and this one by far is the best. Most of the others are "western" observations of eskimos form explorers or anthropologists, but in this book I think you actually begin to see things from their perspective and value system, which is a rare gift. Also because of the time it was written, no political correctness, so you get the real deal. The author has true affection for the Eskimo culturea and lived among them, not just observed. Although I personally never understood why people north of the arctic circle didn't just keep walking south or listen to uncle who had made it to florida I am grateful for this glimpse of life from bvehind their eyes and hearts.

Imagine putting together a committee whose purpose it is to write a book about the oceans around us, their history, and how our lives are affected by them. We would probably need a geologist, a mythology expert, a historian, a marine biologist, a physicist, a Biblical Scholar and his counterpart, an expert on Darwin's theories, an astronomer, a marine engineer, a seer or two, and last but not least, an explorer. Amazingly enough, Peter Freuchen is a sort of one man committee who fulfills all of these requirements and incorporates all of these viewpoints into his BOOK OF THE SEVEN SEAS.

Freuchen devotes chapters to a wide range of ocean related subjects such as the geological history of the earth from the time it was a flaming ball until it became the planet we inhabit today, then ... Read More

Books : Vagrant Viking My Life and Adventures
There are few books like this one, high sprited autobiographies that have a new danger on every two pages. You will read of death, murder, cold, sleepless weeks, long journeys across ice fields, starvation, rescue, strange food, odd social customs, everlassting friendships.
Freuchen, a Dane, begins his tale at his childhood - and one is instantly captivated with his humor and adroit prose style. His story is interesting from the first page to the (all too soon) end of the book. Thankfully he has written others, so the joy of reading more continues.
As a young man, Freuchen makes his first trip to Greenland - and falls in love with the place and the people. The native people teach him there is humor in tragedy, survival in death, human dignity wherever there are humans. Sometimes a bear ... Read More
