"The Gunslinger Born" is the next step in the saga of the Dark Tower. "But that saga is over!" you say? Well, not exactly. Mr. King, in his infinite wisdom, decided that the best ending to a good story is...NO ENDING AT ALL! He'll just keep filling in the blanks of the stories that were glanced over the first go-round until he makes more mon...I mean until the story is fully told. Seriously, though, the Darktower saga is worth hanging around. The GN finds ways to revisit the original story without seeming like it's just repeating it. Peter David pays more attention to the emotional aspect of the story without alluding to the fact that it's already been told. The artwork is beautiful, although a little more attention to backgrounds would be nice. All in all, worth the dough to add to your ... Read More

One of the things I have been doing a lot of reading and thinking on recently has to do with authentic leadership. For most of my ministry life, I have been taught that the leader is full of strength, always knows the answer and is clear on what is happening and where the team/organization is going. While I believe those are qualities of good leadership, that isn't always the case. There are moments of uncertainty, the fog rolls in on your ideas and sometimes you are weak and need your teammates to carry you.

But how do you balance the two? How do you have those moments and not lose any of your followers? Enter Bill George's book True North. George defines authentic leadership as "finding something you are passionate about and then inspiring others to join the cause."

The book was sealed very well, almost enough to keep me out of it. So it didn't have any damage getting to me. As far as the product itself; the story was great, a lot of characters made appearances, although there are unanswered questions by the end it turned out to be a good story.

6.Walden (Pocket Classic) by: Henry David Thoreau

Books : Walden (Pocket Classic)
I've kept Thoreau at arm's length over the years. I sensed his brilliance yet secretly accused him of purposely unconnecting from the world. I was recently lead to him while looking for some essays on gardening. The first subject he covers in Walden is ecomomy. Economy rates low on my reading list. I was further warned by the difficulty of his text in general. Still, I was close to discovering his writings. In the beginning pages he takes me on a tour of opinions needing to be voiced in my life. My fear of crankiness is dispelled with freshness on every page.

In much the same way that the classic "The Mythical Man Month" by Frederick P. Brooks (see my review) has repeatedly been sighted across two decades by numerous publications, this work by Ross, Weill, and Robertson has been referenced so many times in industry periodicals over the last couple years that it needs to be read at least once by everyone in the business world involved in this space. A cursory review of the texts currently available on enterprise architecture shows quite simply that this subject is still rather new. And experience has shown that the topic of enterprise architecture itself can at times cause confusion, misunderstanding, and even divisiveness within a firm, with reasons ranging from difficulty of definition to business or IT politics. The authors of this book tackle the subject well, and provide many examples ... Read More

8.Year in Provence by: Peter Mayle
1992-11
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Year in Provence
This book provides a very intimate view of the author's experiences during his first year of living in Provence in the southeastern part of France. Most of the experiences represent the every day ones we all go through e.g. hiring someone to do work on our house, meeting neighbors through a party, etc. However, the people in Provence have a decidedly different perspective and character, and thus these ordinary experiences appear strange, fascinating and entertaining. This effect comes in part from Mr. Mayle's wit, writing style and emotional reactions to the events of his life. I particularly liked his description of the dress (leather), method of arrival (motorcycle) and behavior and attitudes of students coming into a certain town-absolutely precious. As with the French, food and drink in a Mayle book take an exalted status.

9.WORLD WAR HULK by: Greg Pak, Peter David, John Romita Jr
January 03, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : WORLD WAR HULK
This trade paperback collects Marvel's 2007 five issue "World War Hulk" mini-series. After a grueling stay on the alien planet Sakarr where he ascended from slave to king, Hulk returns to Earth with his allied Sakaar gladiators to punish the Illuminati of Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Doctor Strange and Black Bolt for blasting him into space. Crazy with anger, Hulk orders the 24 hour evacuation of Manhattan while Earth's superheroes attempt to repel him. While sometimes interesting, Pak's plot too often falls into a series of simple battles and features too much of the dull Sentry. Big fans of the Hulk will like this but the $25 list price seems high.
