Like the famous non-sense poem, the book feels like it ought to make sense, but it never does. As you read, you will have the feeling of impending meaning, and that in the next paragraph, or on the next page, or in the next chapter, everything will come together and you will have your moment of clarity. Never happens.

Whatever you think Paulo Freire means, you are wrong.

I am one of 24 co-founders of Earth Intelligence Network, building the EarthGame with inputs from the Transpartisan Policy Institute and the Public Budget Office, and our biggest insight in the past year has been to realize that the 5 billion poor do not have 18 years to go to school; but that they can be taught orally, one cell call at a time, by 100 million volunteers with Internet access and Skype. We simply have to distribute free cell phones in order to help the five billion create stabilizing wealth.

It was therefore for me personally, at the age of 55, a true joy to run across both this book and Pedagogy of the Oppressed as well as Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom both of which I will review shortly.

The only two books coming close ... Read More

This book includes a detailed explanation of the methodologies leading to Pedagogy of the Oppressed. It would be a good "pre-reading" book or post-reading book for those interested in Ped. of the Oppressed. It really brings to life the methods to the wonderful and loving pedagogy that Freire exudes throughout his work. This is a must have for those who buy Ped. of Opp.

Just wanted to say ditto to the previous reviewers. Highly readable, engaging dialogue between the two great minds, a great introduction to their lives and thought. I give this book to friends as a gift probably half a dozen times a year it is that good. Trust me. Buy it. Read it. Go out and transform this world into one less ugly.

(If you have not read Freire's classic 1970 text, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, stop reading this review and go check it out. It is Freire's seminal masterpiece in which he envisions what he called a "liberatory" education--a brilliant theory of education for social change.)

If you have read "Pedagogy of the Oppressed", then you *must* read this! In this wonderful work, Freire tells the story of how the first book came to be written and the journeys that the book has taken him on since. Throughout the tale, he also responds to a lot of the major criticism of the first book in a charitable and brilliant manner. The work's title also comes from a frequent motif in the book, the importance of maintaining hope in our often seemingly hopeless world--an argument that Freire makes beautifully. ... Read More

The presence of the word "letters" in the title should perhaps have warned me what to expect, but as my first exposure to Freire's writing it fell far short of his reputation. I did learn something from the 95 pages of this book, but I could have learned as much in ten were it not for the rambling and repetition throughout. I suspect that starting with Freire's classic Pedagogy of the Oppressed would have been a better use of my time.

Another "problem" with this book is that Freire's critique is specific to the context of his work in Brazil: not just the words but the lessons themselves may require translation. For those who are more interested in a radical critique of education in the US, I'd recommend Schooling in Capitalist America: Educational Reform and the Contradictions of Economic Life ... To misunderstand Freire's humanism as mysticism is closed mindedness of the worst kind. Freire's ideas in this book are crucial for understanding literacy in our context. His educational approach is based on an understanding of communication that reflects Bakhtin's diaologics, an understanding of the relationship between form and content that many of the participants in our current media sphere could learn from, and a basic investment in the value of human beings that are necessary for our age of such wide experiential differences.

At it's core, Freire argues that our reading of the world is preceded by our writing of the world. As long as one is willing to see the world as already made rhetorical by our experiences of ideology, this approach can connect students, teachers, and regular folks (heh ... Read More
